7-Night Nile Cruises
Seven nights is the dahabiya length. These are the small wooden sailing yachts, six to twelve guests in private cabins, that move at the pace of the wind and moor overnight at temples the big ships pass by. A week gives you the full Luxor–Aswan corridor plus the sites the 4-night sailing has to skip: the rock-cut tombs at El Kab, the temple at Esna, the sandstone quarries of Gebel el-Silsila. On a motor cruiser the same week usually becomes a round-trip Luxor to Aswan and back. Every 7-night cruise here carries a private Egyptologist guide, all admissions, full board and transfers.

What is a 7-night Nile cruise?
A 7-night Nile cruise is an eight-day sailing on the Luxor–Aswan stretch, long enough to add the secondary temples that the standard 4-night itinerary leaves out. On a dahabiya it is the signature voyage: El Kab, Esna and Gebel el-Silsila join the headline stops, and the boat moors on sandbanks where the only sound is the rigging. On a motor cruiser, seven nights usually means a round-trip Luxor to Aswan and back to Luxor, finishing where you started.
Dahabiya, Luxor to Aswan
How a week under sail runs
- Days 1–2LuxorBoard and take the East and West Banks in full: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut. No rush to cast off.
- Day 3Esna & El KabThrough the Esna lock to the rock-cut tombs of El Kab, a site the motor ships sail straight past.
- Day 4EdfuThe Temple of Horus at opening, before the day boats arrive. Sail on under canvas through the afternoon.
- Day 5Gebel el-Silsila & Kom OmboThe sandstone quarries that built the temples, then the double temple of Kom Ombo at dusk.
- Day 6AswanPhilae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and a Nubian village on the islands. Two nights moored at Aswan.
- Day 7At leisure on the riverA mooring on a quiet sandbank, swimming off the deck, lunch under the awning. The day the schedule lets go.
- Day 8DisembarkBreakfast aboard, then the transfer to Aswan airport or the start of your onward leg.
Motor-cruiser weeks run as a round trip: Luxor to Aswan and back, finishing where you boarded.
BudgetSalacia Nile Cruise
Nile (cruise route)
You board MS Salacia at the Luxor Nile pier and sign in at reception; luggage moves to your cabin while I run through the day's timings. The vessel operates four nights between Luxor and Aswan on a Classic Nile-cruise scale: cabins are compact, Nile-cruise standard with en suite facilities – not an ocean liner. I time the major visits for cooler hours: Karnak's Hypostyle Hall before the tourist coaches, and Luxor Temple at dusk when the light is kinder and the heat eases. On the West Bank we visit the Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatshepsut's mortuary temple; site entry allows access to selected tombs and involves short walks and uneven stone surfaces. We sail past riverbank villages and farmland from the shaded sun deck; the boat often moors at the Esna lock in the late afternoon. Edfu receives a two-hour guided visit because the Horus Temple needs more than a quick stop, and Kom Ombo sits at quay level with a short stair into the courtyard. Meals are full-board on board, with Egyptian dishes, salads and a set-menu dinner; coffee and tea service runs through the afternoon. We disembark in Aswan for Philae Temple by motorboat and a scheduled visit to the High Dam. Abu Simbel is not part of the standard cruise: arrange a separate transfer by plane (approx. $180 one-way) or by road (about 3.5–4 hours each way, early start). I manage pacing and walking routes so the heat and steps remain manageable.

Standard site entrance fees are included; optional extras such as Abu Simbel flights, pyramid interiors and gratuities are not included.

BudgetLe Fayan Nile Cruise
Nile (cruise route)
Board MS Le Fayan at the Luxor Corniche pier and step aboard a compact Nile cruise that runs four days downriver to Aswan. I guide the shore excursions myself when available; we move with the light – morning visits to the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple when tombs are coolest, late-afternoon walk through Karnak's Hypostyle Hall if crowds thin. Cabins are Nile-cruise size and practical, with private en suite bathrooms and wardrobe space; this is intimate, not an ocean liner. Each afternoon you sit on the shaded sun deck and watch feluccas, fishermen and river markets pass close to the bank. We stop at Edfu and Kom Ombo for temple walks; plan on 60–90 minute shore calls in Edfu and a short market visit at Kom Ombo's quay. In Aswan we moor on the Corniche and arrange the motorboat transfer to Philae Temple. Meals follow local rhythms: breakfasts and lunches on board, an evening of grilled fish when the catch is good. Note practical details up front: luggage transfers use the pier gangway, mobile signal is patchy between Nile bends, and some tombs require extra-permit fees. If you like quiet mornings in old temples and direct commentary from an Egyptologist, this four-day downriver cruise keeps logistics simple and the day-to-day focused on sites and sunlight.

BudgetMedea Nile Cruise
Aswan
You board at Luxor's Nile pier and meet your Egyptologist on the gangway. We walk straight to Karnak's Hypostyle Hall for a measured tour before the midday heat, then stop at Luxor Temple as lights come up after dusk. MS Medea runs a four-day, southbound route from Luxor to Aswan on a classic river scale: cabins are roughly 12 m² with river-view windows and modest storage – comfortable, not ocean-liner spacious. We pass through the Esna lock in late afternoon; expect the engine noise for 10–20 minutes while the gates close. The schedule gives two hours at Edfu's Temple of Horus by design – most cruisers skimp on this site, so we moor overnight to allow a calmer visit. On arrival in Aswan we visit Philae by motorboat, see the High Dam from the causeway, and disembark at Aswan pier after breakfast. Your Egyptologist handles commentaries, timings, and the short walks on uneven stone; I advise sensible shoes and a small daypack. Meals are full board on board; breakfast, lunch, and dinner follow a mix of local and continental dishes. Bar charges, gratuities, and optional extras sit outside the itinerary. If you want a hot-air balloon over the West Bank, tell me in advance – it means an extra early start and an added fee. This cruise suits travelers who prefer unhurried temple visits, steady river sailing, and clear daily plans.

Esna

We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we coordinate a licensed Egyptologist for every sailing. Unlike larger Nile cruise ships, the dahabiya ties up at small riverbanks such as Fawaza and El Hegz, allowing visits to local villages and markets that larger vessels cannot reach. Evenings are relaxed on deck, with candlelit dinners ashore at quieter moorings and wide views of the Nile at sunset.

Sonesta Amirat Dahabiya

The seven-day route calls at El Kab, the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Gebel El Silsila, Kom Ombo, the Daraw market and Philae, with time to walk village lanes and watch river life from deck. We do not run group bus tours, so shore visits are longer and paced for photography and conversation. Unlike larger Nile cruise ships, a dahabiya moors in quieter spots and can visit small riverbank sites directly. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange your Egyptologist, local permits and transfers on the ground.

Three Pyramids Dahabiya

You pass through the historic Esna Lock, visit a riverside village and explore the Temple of Horus at Edfu and the twin temples at Kom Ombo. We favour small-group dahabiya sailings with eight to 12 guests rather than larger motor-ship cruises, so visits are quieter and more flexible. Our Egyptologists lead the sightseeing and we are a licensed Egyptian tour operator, available to answer planning questions and arrange your transfers and onward travel.

Soleil Nile Cruise
Luxor

The route visits Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatshepsut's temple, the Colossi of Memnon, the Temple of Horus at Edfu and the double temple at Kom Ombo, then Aswan's High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae. Meals are served onboard and guided tours are led by our Egyptologists; entrance fees for included sites are covered. We schedule visits to avoid the hottest midday hours where possible, and we time key visits to reduce overlap with larger group tours. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange transfers, Egyptologists and cabin bookings on your behalf.

Miriam Nile Cruise
Nile (cruise route)
You board MS Miriam at the Luxor Corniche pier mid-afternoon and settle into a compact river cabin before the first walk to Karnak. I meet you on the quay: I am the Egyptologist who guides this route and I take you straight to the temple avenues where the sound of sandals on sandstone and the smell of date-syrup stalls still set the rhythm of the day. We start early on the West Bank at the Valley of the Kings – low light, few people, and panels that explain the painted ceilings up close. Back on board you watch the Nile change color as the vessel slips through the Esna lock; we moor overnight near Edfu so the temple visit gets two hours rather than a rushed stop. Day three gives you Kom Ombo’s double shrines and the Nile at dusk; on arrival in Aswan I show you Philae’s hypostyle hall and the High Dam’s concrete scale against the river. Cabins are compact (about 12 m²) – classic river scale, not ocean-liner. Full board includes three meals daily; breakfasts are early to match excursions. Practical notes: bring a hat for the tombs, wear closed shoes on uneven rock, and expect short walks and stairs at most sites. I walk every route with you, point out mason’s marks and later-period graffiti, and keep the timing tight so photography fits the light.

Practical questions
What clients ask about this style of holiday.
01Is a 7-night Nile cruise worth it?
Yes, especially on a dahabiya. Seven nights buys the secondary temples that the 4-night sailing skips: El Kab, Esna and Gebel el-Silsila, plus the time to take the river in rather than tick it off. On a motor cruiser, a week usually means a round-trip Luxor to Aswan and back, which suits travellers who want to end where they started.
02What is the difference between a 7-night dahabiya and a motor cruiser?
Size and pace. A dahabiya carries six to twelve guests under sail and moors at small temples no large ship can reach; a motor cruiser carries forty to two hundred and runs to a fixed dock schedule. Over seven nights the dahabiya adds El Kab, Esna and Gebel el-Silsila and gives you private guiding throughout. The motor cruiser covers the same headline temples on a round-trip and costs less per night.
03How much does a 7-night Nile cruise cost?
A 7-night cabin on a shared dahabiya starts around £1,650 per person, all-inclusive of full board, Egyptologist guiding and every admission. Whole-boat dahabiya charters run higher and suit a family or group taking all the cabins. A round-trip motor cruiser week sits at the lower end of that range. Solo travellers pay a supplement of 50 to 75 percent.
04Can I sail round-trip Luxor to Aswan and back in 7 nights?
Yes. A round-trip Luxor to Aswan to Luxor is the standard motor-cruiser shape for seven nights, and it means you fly in and out of the same city. You see the temples twice in different light, and the return leg is slower because the dock pressure eases. We book the round-trip when your flights favour a single base city.
