Get your bearings

What Aswan actually is

Aswan is the quietest town on the Egyptian Nile — a frontier place where the river breaks into channels around granite islands and the desert finally wins. For thousands of years this was the edge of Egypt and the doorway to Nubia and Africa beyond, and you can still feel the change: the food is spicier, the houses are painted bright, and the pace drops a gear.

The headline sights are on the water. Philae temple, rescued stone by stone from the rising lake and rebuilt on its own island, is best reached by motorboat at the end of the day. Feluccas — the lateen-sailed boats that have worked this river forever — drift between Elephantine Island and the Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie wrote.

Aswan is also the launch point for Abu Simbel, Ramses II's colossal temple cut into a mountain three hours south. Most cruises end here; two nights is enough to see the town properly and still fit Abu Simbel in.

What you're really here to see

The landmarks that make Aswan

Philae temple on its island in the Nile at Aswan01

Philae Temple

A temple to Isis on its own island, moved block by block to higher ground when the dams raised the water. Arrive by motorboat in the late afternoon, when the stone turns honey-gold and the crowds have thinned to almost nobody.

Half day · go late

Brightly painted Nubian houses on the west bank at Aswan02

A Nubian village

The west-bank villages are a riot of cobalt and ochre, with henna, hibiscus tea and the odd resident crocodile. Reach them by felucca across the river — the journey is as much the point as the destination.

2–3 hours

The Aswan High Dam holding back Lake Nasser03

The Aswan High Dam

The 1960s engineering project that tamed the Nile's annual flood and created Lake Nasser, the largest reservoir in the world. The scale is the story — and it's the reason Philae and Abu Simbel had to be moved at all.

1 hour, often paired

The four colossal statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel04

Abu Simbel

Three hours south, four 20-metre statues of Ramses II guard a temple carved straight into the mountainside — then lifted whole, in the 1960s, above the rising lake. Reached by an early road convoy or a short flight from Aswan.

Full day or short flight

Time to allow

How many days in Aswan?

Aswan rewards slowness, but the sights themselves don't take long.

1 nightThe cruise stop

Philae, the High Dam and a sunset felucca — the standard end-of-cruise day in Aswan.

2 nightsThe right amount

Add Abu Simbel — by dawn flight or road convoy — and a slow morning among the Nubian villages and Elephantine Island.

3 nightsSlow south

Stretch out with the unfinished obelisk, the Nubian Museum, and an afternoon doing nothing on a hotel terrace above the cataract.

Cruise endAswan to Luxor

Many cruises start or finish here; Aswan is the southern turn of the classic river journey.

Where it fits

South to Abu Simbel

A dawn flight or road convoy reaches Ramses II's mountain temple and returns the same day.

Back to Cairo

Out to the Red Sea

Connect via Cairo or a longer drive for a coral-reef finale after Upper Egypt.

Best time to visit

When to go to Aswan

Aswan is the warmest of the Nile towns — kind in winter, fierce in summer.

October–April · best

Mild, dry and bright (24–32°C) — the season Aswan was made for, and reliable winter sun when Britain isn't. Evenings on the water are cool and clear. Book around Christmas and February half-term.

May–September · hot

Routinely above 40°C. The town all but closes at midday; mornings and evenings are still pleasant on the river, and prices drop hard.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

Twice a year (around 22 February and 22 October) the rising sun reaches the inner sanctuary of Abu Simbel — a packed but remarkable morning.

Felucca season

Sunset sails are best October to April, when the breeze is steady and the light is long. Summer evenings work too, once the day's heat lifts.

The practical part

Getting there & around

Small, slow and built around the river — the practical part.

01

Getting in

Aswan airport (ASW) is about 25 minutes from town, with daily flights from Cairo and Luxor and the Abu Simbel hop. Many arrive by cruise instead.

02

On the water

Half of Aswan's sights are reached by boat — Philae by motorboat, the Nubian villages and islands by felucca. We arrange private boats so you set the pace.

03

To Abu Simbel

Either a short early flight (in and out before lunch) or a guided road convoy of about three hours each way. We book whichever suits your schedule.

04

Getting around

The town centre is walkable along the corniche; sights outside town go by private car with an Egyptologist guide.

Common questions

Aswan, answered

01How many days should I spend in Aswan?+

Two nights is ideal — one for Philae, the High Dam and a sunset felucca, and one for Abu Simbel plus the Nubian villages. One night works if you're only seeing the town on a cruise stop.

02Is Abu Simbel worth the trip from Aswan?+

Yes — it's one of the most striking monuments in Egypt: four 20-metre statues of Ramses II carved into a mountain, then relocated whole above the rising lake. Reach it by a short dawn flight or a guided road convoy, returning the same day.

03What is a felucca and should I sail on one?+

A felucca is the traditional lateen-sailed boat of the Nile. A sunset sail around Elephantine Island and the Nubian west bank is the quintessential Aswan hour — slow, quiet and worth building in.

04How do I get from Aswan to Luxor?+

By Nile cruise (3–4 nights, the scenic classic) past Kom Ombo and Edfu, or by a 3-hour drive or short flight if you're not sailing.

05When is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?+

Around 22 February and 22 October, when the sunrise penetrates 60 metres into the temple to light the inner sanctuary. It draws crowds, but it's a genuine spectacle if your dates line up.

06Is Aswan worth visiting if I've seen Luxor?+

Very much so — it's a different Egypt. Where Luxor is dense with monuments, Aswan is about the river, the Nubian culture and a slower southern pace, plus the springboard to Abu Simbel.
