The short answer

What is an Egypt holiday, and what does it cost?

Egypt Discovery arranges 28 Egypt holidays of 4 to 14 nights, most of them private. Prices currently start from £676 per person for 4 nights, based on two sharing. The from-price covers whatever appears under "Included" on each holiday: in most cases the hotels, the Nile cruise if there is one, entrance fees, an English-speaking Egyptologist and transport.

An Egypt holiday joins Cairo and the Pyramids to the temples of the Nile Valley at Luxor and Aswan, usually with 3 to 7 nights cruising between the two. Longer holidays add Abu Simbel, Alexandria or a few days by the Red Sea.

Our holidays are private as standard – only your own party, with your own Egyptologist, driver and vehicle. Some include internal flights or the sleeper train, and each holiday page says which. Flights from the UK are separate; we do not sell them, and suggest booking with an ATOL holder. Travel insurance is extra as well, and we'd always advise taking it out.

Which kind of holiday

Private, small-group, family or budget?

Private Egypt holidays
This is how we normally work. The holiday is for your party only, with your own Egyptologist, driver and car, on dates that suit you. Most holidays on this page are private.
Small-group Egypt holidays
A guide and vehicle shared with a handful of other travellers on fixed dates, so each person pays less. Departures are limited at present, so do ask what is running.
Family Egypt holidays
Gentler days, rooms and cabins that keep everyone together, and guides who hold children's attention. What a child pays depends on their age.
Budget Egypt holidays
The route and the sites stay the same; the hotels are 4-star and the dates quieter. The guiding is unchanged.

Honest answers

Egypt holiday questions, answered.

  1. 01How long should an Egypt holiday be?

Our guests most often choose seven days (6 nights): Cairo, Aswan, a 3-night Nile cruise to Luxor, and Abu Simbel. With eight days you gain a fourth night on the river, sailing from Luxor. Ten days leaves room for the Red Sea or a gentler schedule. Twelve to fourteen days brings in Alexandria, the White Desert, or both. Under 5 days the flights start to dominate.

  2. 02How much does an Egypt holiday cost from the UK?

Prices on this page currently start from £676 per person (5 days, two sharing); each holiday shows its own from-price. The hotel and ship tier and the time of year move the price most: Christmas, New Year and the school half-terms cost more. Flights from the UK are separate.

  3. 03Is a Nile cruise included in Egypt holidays?

Yes, on most of our multi-day holidays of 7 days or more – the cruise covers the southern stretch between Luxor and Aswan. We do offer land-only holidays too, though the Nile cruise is what most first-time visitors come to Egypt for. You then choose between a cruise ship (5-star, 100–200 guests, quicker) and a dahabiya (6–12 guests, under sail, slower).

  4. 04Is Egypt safe for UK travellers in 2026?

Yes. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Nile cruise route and the Red Sea resorts are all clear of FCDO 'against travel' advisories. The advice is stricter only for the North Sinai border and the Libyan frontier, and none of our holidays go there. Our offices in Egypt are on hand round the clock.

  5. 05When's the best time to visit Egypt from the UK?

October through April. Daytime temperatures 18–27°C, dry, low humidity. October half-term and February half-term are peak UK weeks. Easter is the underrated shoulder. July and August in Upper Egypt are 40–46°C – we don't run southern itineraries those months by default.

  6. 06Do UK passport holders need a visa?

Yes. Easiest is the US$30 e-Visa (visa2egypt.gov.eg, single entry, 3–5 working days). Or buy the visa when you land for US$36, at the digital consoles in the immigration hall. Your passport needs at least six months' validity from the date you enter. Full visa guidance comes with every confirmed booking.

  7. 07Can you tailor the holiday to our requirements?

Every Egypt holiday we run is fully tailor-made. Adjust the pace, swap ships, add a hot-air balloon over Luxor or Red Sea diving, replace Cairo with Alexandria, extend the beach segment. Tell us your dates, numbers, budget and the sights you can't miss, and a tailored itinerary will follow within a working day.

  8. 08What is included in the from-price of a holiday?

Whatever appears under "Included" on that holiday's page. In most cases that means hotels, the Nile cruise if the holiday has one, entrance fees for the sites on the itinerary, an English-speaking Egyptologist and transport. A number of holidays include internal flights or the sleeper train as well, so do check the one you are looking at. Flights from the UK are not included.

  9. 09How early should I book an Egypt holiday?

If you are travelling over Christmas and New Year, try to have the booking confirmed roughly six months beforehand, and the same goes for Easter. Cairo hotels are difficult to secure over Eid. For the total solar eclipse in August 2027 there is very little left, so if we find you space it is worth taking.

  10. 10What deposit do you ask for?

Between about 25% and 50% of the holiday price. The season decides it, along with whether train or flight tickets are included.

  11. 11What happens if I need to cancel?

You can cancel. How much is refunded depends on how near to departure you are. Our cancellation and refund policy page gives the terms in full. Cancellation and refund policy
