The decision
Choosing your base in Luxor
The Nile divides Luxor, and the city grew up on both sides of it. The East Bank is the living town: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the corniche and most of the hotels. The West Bank was the old city of the dead: the Valley of the Kings, rural and quiet, with a few small lodges among the sugarcane. Which bank you wake up on sets the pace of the whole holiday.
East Bank & the corniche
Anyone on a first visit who wants the river and the temples close
Nile-front hotels face the West Bank hills and sit within easy reach of Karnak and Luxor Temple. This area has the most 5-star hotels and is the obvious base for a first stay in Luxor.
Luxor town centre
Walkers and the budget-minded
Smaller hotels a few streets from the water, close to the souk and Luxor Temple. You give up the view but get better value, with the temples and the market a walk away.
The West Bank
Returning guests who want to reach the tombs at first light
Boutique lodges and farm-stay hotels set among cane fields and the necropolis. You reach the Valley of the Kings ahead of the coaches, and swap nightlife for ferry crossings and rural quiet.
Nile-front garden resorts
Couples and slower stays
Bigger resorts a short way upriver, with pools running down to the water and an unhurried pace. Choose these when the hotel is a big part of the holiday and not simply a bed between sights.
Reading the star ratings
What the stars mean in Luxor
Star ratings in Egypt tend to flatter, so here is what each grade really gets you in Luxor.
Tidy, welcoming rooms in the middle of town, or a plain lodge on the West Bank. En-suite, air-conditioning and a real breakfast – the basics done well, near the temples, without the polish.
Mid-range comfort: a pool, a couple of restaurants and, often, a Nile-view room on the East Bank corniche at a clearly lower rate than the famous names.
The historic Nile-front hotels and the garden resorts — full service, balconies over the river, and the rooms worth asking us which ones actually face the water.
From the collection
Luxor hotels our team reserves
Here is a selection of the Luxor hotels we book, spread over the East Bank, the river and the quieter West Bank. Give us your dates and the side you prefer and we will match a room at our net rate.

Steigenberger Resort Achti Luxor
Steigenberger Resort Achti Luxor is a centrally located Luxor hotel we use as a stable base for multi-day East and West Bank sightseeing. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange room reservations, airport and local transfers, and private Egyptologists for visits to Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the West Bank necropolis. We prefer land-based hotels for longer stays because they avoid daily packing and provide a consistent overnight address, unlike short Nile-cruise nights that move every day. Expect early starts for Valley of the Kings visits, possible town traffic at peak hours, and the usual hot, dry afternoons in summer.

Steigenberger Nile Palace – Luxor
Steigenberger Nile Palace sits on Luxor's Nile Corniche on the East Bank, within easy reach of Luxor Temple and the river piers. Rooms face the Nile or the city. We favour this hotel as a practical city base for East Bank sightseeing; unlike cruise passengers, guests return to the same hotel each evening. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator we arrange Nile-view rooms, private transfers and guided visits with our Egyptologists. Trade-offs: lower-floor rooms can suffer Corniche traffic noise, and the hotel is a modern property rather than a small, historic guesthouse.

Sonesta St. George, Luxor
Sonesta St. George sits on Luxor’s Nile Corniche on the East Bank, a short drive from Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange private transfers, Egyptologist-guided pickups and timed-entry tickets where available. Distinctive POV: we do not run large coach arrivals; private transfers reduce waiting and help with early starts. Compared with cruise-based stays, staying on the East Bank cuts crossing time to West Bank sites in the morning. Trade-offs: Corniche traffic can be audible in road-side rooms and riverside rooms face more sun in mid-afternoon.

Sofitel Winter Palace – Luxor
The Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor is a historic Nile-front hotel opened in 1907 and set within walled gardens. Its location on the corniche places Luxor Temple a short walk away, with Karnak Temple reachable by a brief transfer. We prefer the Winter Palace when clients want a town-centre base with formal gardens and direct access to shops and museums, rather than a river-cruise cabin. Rooms in the original Palace wing retain period proportions; some have lower ceilings and smaller bathrooms, so consider a garden- or Nile-view room for a more modern layout. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange private transfers, room requests and early museum access.

Pyramisa Isis Luxor – Hotel on the Nile Corniche
Pyramisa Isis Luxor sits on Luxor's Corniche with Nile-facing rooms and straightforward access to Luxor Temple. We pair the hotel with one of our Egyptologists for private, half-day guided visits; unlike cruise-ship shore calls, this keeps start times flexible. Rooms with Nile views are popular for morning light but can be busier in high season. Daytime heat can be intense between April and October; we recommend early-morning visits and a late-afternoon rest. We arrange private transfers, guided excursions, and room requests on your behalf as a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Pavillon Winter Luxor
Pavillon Winter Luxor is a five-star hotel on the Nile Corniche in central Luxor, standing right beside Luxor Temple. The East Bank puts the temple, the river and the town's streets around you, while the West Bank sites lie across the water. Few hotels in the city sit so close to a major monument. We book this hotel on request as part of a trip to Egypt, and we confirm the room type, meal plan and rate conditions for you before you pay.

Jolie Ville Hotel & Spa Kings Island Luxor
Jolie Ville Hotel & Spa Kings Island Luxor is a five-star hotel on Kings Island, reached from Aswan Road. This is a resort-style address set apart from the town centre, so plan a short road journey whenever you head out to the sights. Listed facilities include a spa, gym, pool, garden, restaurant, bar and kids' club. We book the hotel on request as part of a wider Luxor trip, and we will confirm rooms, meal plan and spa services for your dates before anything is arranged.

Hilton Luxor – Nile Corniche, East Bank
Hilton Luxor is an international-brand hotel in Luxor that we book for travellers seeking consistent service and straightforward logistics. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange private transfers, room requests and guided-excursion departures. Distinctive POV: we prefer boutique hotels for extended stays because they offer more local character; Hilton Luxor suits short stays or tightly timed itineraries. Compared with small guesthouses, Hilton centralises check-in and on-site services, which helps when flights arrive late. Trade-offs: busier public areas, less local character and higher peak-season rates than smaller properties. We can request specific room types and early breakfasts to match departures for Luxor West Bank sites.

Aracan Eatabe Luxor Hotel, Nile Corniche
Aracan Eatabe Luxor Hotel is a four-star hotel at 16 Cornish El Nile Street, on Luxor's riverfront. The listing shows a pool, a spa, a gym, a garden, a restaurant, a bar, a concierge and a business centre. Egypt Discovery arranges the booking, confirms your room and passes on any requests when you reserve. Staff at reception can advise on transfers, tickets for the sites and guided visits.

El Nakhil Hotel, Gezira El Bairat, Luxor
El Nakhil Hotel is a three-star hotel in Gezira El Bairat, on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor. Central Luxor and Karnak Temple sit on the opposite bank, so this is a quieter, more rural base than the town hotels. It suits travellers who want to wake up on the same side of the river as the ancient burial grounds. The listing shows features such as a pool, garden, restaurant and bar. Room details and meal arrangements are confirmed for your dates when you book.

El Mesala Hotel, Al Ramla, Luxor West Bank
El Mesala Hotel is a three-star hotel at Gezira El Bairat, in the Al Ramla area of Luxor's West Bank. The Nile runs between you and the town centre, and you wake up on the side of the river that holds the Valley of the Kings and the other western monuments. Karnak and Luxor Temple are on the far bank. The listing shows a pool, garden, spa, rooftop terrace, restaurant and bar. Egypt Discovery can confirm rooms and meals for your dates.

Karnak-side Luxor Hotel for the 2027 Solar Eclipse
Stay in Luxor during the 2027 solar eclipse at this three-star hotel in the Karnak area. The stay includes an on-site briefing from our local team about eclipse-day arrangements and timing. Your room rate covers accommodation for the nights reserved, daily housekeeping and complimentary WiFi in guest rooms and public areas. Meals are not included unless you add a board basis when booking, leaving you free to make your own dining plans. This is a hotel stay rather than a sightseeing package: visits to Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the Nile corniche can be planned independently. Airport transfers and local taxi fares are not included.

Iberotel Aracan, Luxor
Iberotel Aracan is a centrally located hotel in Luxor used as a base for East Bank and West Bank visits. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange stays, private transfers and early West Bank starts from Iberotel Aracan. We choose this hotel for travellers who prioritise convenient access to Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple over resort-scale leisure facilities. Unlike Nile cruise shore calls, a hotel base lets you begin West Bank visits at first light. Rooms are comfortable; facilities are more compact than larger Nile-side resorts, and Corniche traffic can be audible during peak season. We can add private guiding and transfers on request.

Nile Castle Luxor
Nile Castle Luxor is a four-star hotel in Al Bairat, on Luxor's West Bank. The West Bank lies across the Nile from the East Bank and holds the Theban necropolis, with sites such as the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari. Staying here puts you on the same side of the river as those monuments, though journey times depend on the route and transport. The listed facilities include a restaurant, bar, spa and rooftop terrace. We book the hotel on request and confirm rooms and meals for your dates before you pay.

New Memnon Hotel Luxor
New Memnon Hotel is on Memnon Street, on the West Bank of Luxor. That bank lies across the Nile from the town centre and is the starting point for sites such as the Valley of the Kings and Medinet Habu. Staying here is a very different choice from an East Bank hotel by Luxor Temple. The three-star hotel lists a pool, garden, rooftop terrace, restaurant and bar. We book it on request as part of your trip, and we confirm rooms, meals and services for your dates before anything is arranged.

Luxor Temple
The temple in the middle of town, a short walk from the East Bank hotels and at its best floodlit after dark.

The Valley, the temples and the green Nile valley from the air at first light — worth booking early as allocations fill quickly.

Before you book
The practical side of a Luxor stay
Some points to settle before you choose a Luxor hotel.
How many nights
Two nights is enough for Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank tombs. A third lets you add a balloon flight and Dendera or Edfu without hurrying. Many holidays arrive in Luxor on a Nile cruise from Aswan.
Getting in
The airport is a ten- to fifteen-minute drive from the East Bank hotels, and a private transfer that tracks your flight keeps the arrival simple. On a cruise, your ship ties up on the East Bank in the middle of town.
East Bank or West
Choose the East Bank for the temples, the corniche and the wider range of hotels. Cross to the West Bank only if you want rural calm and to be at the tombs before the coaches. The ferry runs all day.
Heat shapes the day
Between late spring and autumn the heat in Luxor is considerable. The temples and tombs are at their best when the gates open, so staying close to your first stop, on the corniche or over on the West Bank, gives you the coolest part of the day.
Common questions
Luxor hotels, answered
01Which part of Luxor is best to stay in?+
On a first visit, the East Bank corniche gives you Nile views, the widest choice of hotels and Karnak and Luxor Temple close by. On a smaller budget, stay in the town and walk to the souk and the temple; for rural calm and an early start at the Valley of the Kings, cross to the West Bank. We pick the bank to suit how you want your mornings to go.
02East Bank or West Bank: which suits me?+
The East Bank suits most people, since the temples, the corniche, the restaurants and nearly all the hotels are there. The West Bank is for returning guests who prefer farmland calm and the tombs before the crowds; you give up choice and nightlife for quiet and a ferry ride into town.
03How long should I stay in Luxor?+
Allow two nights for Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank tombs, or three if you want to add a dawn balloon flight and a temple such as Dendera or Edfu at an easy pace. Many travellers come by Nile cruise from Aswan and spend their final nights here.
04Is a Nile-view hotel in Luxor worth the extra?+
On the East Bank, for most people, yes – the outlook across to the West Bank hills is part of Luxor's appeal. But not every room sold as 'Nile view' faces the water, so we will tell you which hotels and room types deserve the rate and which are just selling the address.
05Can I go up in a hot-air balloon while staying in Luxor?+
Yes – balloons take off over the West Bank at first light, and we collect you from your hotel before dawn. Nearly everyone is glad they added it, so we will put it into your stay and arrange the early transfer.
06Is breakfast included at your Luxor hotels, and do you meet us at the airport?+
Nearly every Luxor hotel we book includes breakfast, and we confirm it on your quote. Airport pickup is easy to add: a private transfer that tracks your flight from Luxor airport to your hotel, or a meeting at the ship if you are cruising.
