Best time to go
The most comfortable months are October to April, when daytime temperatures around Luxor are typically milder and site visits are easier to manage. Summer months can be very hot, so an early departure is preferable; this itinerary is arranged to reach Abydos before the busiest coach arrivals. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening patterns and traffic can vary slightly, so timings are best confirmed at booking.
- Discovery Tours Egypt is a Class-A licensed Egyptian tour operator.
- An Egyptologist guides visits at both temples.
- The listed site entrance fees are included.
- Lunch at a local restaurant and one bottle of water per person are included.
- Pickup and drop-off are provided within Luxor city limits.
- Transport between the sites is by air-conditioned vehicle.
02Overview
A first look
Dendera’s Hathor Temple includes a largely intact astronomical ceiling. Abydos is renowned for Seti I’s king-list and the Osireion, both requiring time to study on site.
Background
The facts
Dendera Temple Complex, usually referred to as Dendera or Dendara, lies about 60 km north of Luxor on the west bank route towards Qena. The main surviving temple is the Ptolemaic Temple of Hathor, built in its current form in the late Ptolemaic and early Roman periods, although the site was sacred long before that. The complex is known for its finely preserved reliefs, including the Hathor chapel scenes and astronomical ceiling decorations.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- This excursion suits travellers who want a focused temple day from Luxor rather than a shopping-oriented sightseeing programme. It is well matched to adults and older children with a moderate interest in ancient religion, reliefs and temple symbolism, and to visitors who are comfortable with several hours in an air-conditioned vehicle.
Maybe not, if
- Choose a shorter outing if several hours on the road and walking around temple sites would be difficult. Strollers are impractical inside the temples because of steps, uneven stone and narrow passages.
What lingers
- 01Private day trip from Luxor with one of our Egyptologists, not a large coach tour.
- 02Visit Abydos' Seti I Temple to see the Abydos King List and well-preserved reliefs.
- 03Explore Dendera's Temple of Hathor, including painted ceiling reliefs and Hathor-headed columns.
- 04We schedule Abydos first to avoid late-afternoon heat and give Dendera more time on site.
- 05Standard site entrance fees included; premium tombs and optional gratuities are not included.

Worth knowing
How this compares
Many excursions schedule Abydos later in the day; this trip aims to visit it before mid-afternoon, ahead of peak coach arrivals. Unlike itineraries that add tourist bazaars, the stated focus is on the temples and their archaeological features.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
At Dendara, look up in the columned halls to examine the carved ceiling and astronomical details.
- 02
Allow time to look closely at the Hathor chapel reliefs rather than viewing them only from the doorway.
- 03
At Abydos, ask your Egyptologist to explain how the king list differs from a complete record of every ruler.
- 04
Wear shoes with a firm sole; ancient temple floors and thresholds can be uneven.

Where it fits
This full-day excursion fits during a Luxor stay before or after visits to Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. It adds two major temple sites north of Luxor, but the long road journey makes it a demanding day.

Children & families
Minimum recommended age is five due to sustained walking and uneven surfaces at both temples. Strollers are impractical at the temples because of steps and cobbles; a baby carrier is more suitable. Please tell us each child’s age when you book so we can confirm seating, meals and any special assistance. Each child has their own seat, so transport, the guide and meals cost the same as for an adult whatever their age. Site entry is free for under-6s and full price from 6.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How long is the Dendara & Abydos day trip?
This is a full-day excursion from Luxor that occupies most daylight hours. Expect an early start and a long day on the road to cover both sites comfortably. We do not run large coach groups on this route; where possible we use smaller vehicles and a dedicated guide to reduce waits at entrances. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we confirm exact pickup times when you book.02What will I see at Dendara and Abydos?
You visit Dendara's Temple of Hathor and Abydos' Temple of Seti I and the Osireion. Highlights include Hathor-headed capitals and painted ceiling reliefs at Dendara, and the Abydos King List and the Osireion's unusual construction at Abydos. Our Egyptologists focus on the inscriptions and ritual architecture rather than a purely chronological overview, and they point out conservation issues and later repairs as part of the commentary.03Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?
Not fully – both sites have uneven ancient stone, steps, and limited wheelchair access. Paths are often cobbled or sandy and there are steps into some chambers; shade is limited at midday. We can reduce walking where possible and arrange nearer vehicle drop-offs, but please tell us your exact needs at the time of booking so we can plan appropriately.04Are entrance fees and tickets included?
Standard site entrance fees are included in the tour price. Extra‑ticketed areas, special-access chambers or premium tombs require separate tickets and are excluded unless requested in advance. If you want specific extra-access (for example a special chamber or guided conservation visit) we can arrange it but will confirm any additional costs beforehand.05What should I bring and wear for this trip?
Bring sun protection, sturdy walking shoes, water, and modest clothing for temple visits. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, high‑SPF sunscreen, at least one litre of water per person, sunglasses, and a light layer for morning or evening. Temples expect modest dress (shoulders and knees covered); carry small change for toilets, tips and refreshments.06Will an Egyptologist lead the visit?
Yes – an Egyptologist normally accompanies the temple visits where possible. Our Egyptologists concentrate on inscriptions, ritual contexts and architectural details specific to Dendara and Abydos rather than generic commentary. If you prefer a guide in a particular language or a private Egyptologist, tell us at booking and we will confirm availability and any supplement.

LuxorDendera Temple Half Day Trip from Luxor
The Temple of Dendera is dedicated to Hathor, an ancient Egyptian goddess associated with music, love and motherhood. Its main temple took shape chiefly during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, offering a different architectural setting from the predominantly New Kingdom temples around Luxor. Look for carved columns, reliefs and astronomical imagery across the temple complex. Our private licensed Egyptologist guide explains the site’s history and features as you explore. The excursion includes lunch at a local restaurant. Unlike visits focused only on Luxor’s New Kingdom monuments, Dendera adds a clear contrast in period and religious dedication.

Luxor Museum Half-Day Tour
Luxor Museum presents archaeological finds from ancient Thebes, including objects from the New Kingdom and finds associated with royal tombs. A private licensed Egyptologist guide can explain how individual objects relate to the history of the city and its rulers. Unlike a self-guided visit, this tour includes a guide to provide historical context as you view the collection. The visit centres on the museum rather than combining it with other archaeological sites, so the focus stays on the objects and their stories. It is a considered introduction to Luxor’s ancient past, indoors and away from the scale of the city’s open-air temple complexes.

Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples Day Trip from Luxor
Visit the temples of Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo on a road-based excursion from Luxor. At Esna, the Temple of Khnum stands below modern street level, with its surviving hypostyle hall known for carved columns and a decorated ceiling. Edfu’s temple is dedicated to Horus, while Kom Ombo has paired sanctuaries associated with Sobek and Horus the Elder. Our private licensed Egyptologist guide can explain the buildings and their reliefs as you explore. Unlike brief stops on some Nile cruise itineraries, this excursion visits all three named temples in one day. Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
