Wadi El Gemal National Park: a day south of Marsa Alam

A protected stretch of desert valley, mangroves and clear water, finished with a swim at a white beach.

Most Red Sea holidays are about the water, and Wadi El Gemal is a reminder of how much land is out there as well. The name means valley of the camels. It combines a dry riverbed, a rugged landscape and a coast that is rich in life.

How the day runs

Pick-up is around 08:00. You reach the park by mid-morning, and stop at the visitor area to learn about the place. The drive continues through the wadi and along the mangrove coast. Mangroves are trees that grow in salt water, and they shelter young fish and birds. By late morning you arrive at Sharm El Luli.

  • 09:30: arrival at the park and visitor area.
  • 10:30: drive through the wadi and the mangrove shore.
  • 11:30: swim and snorkel at Sharm El Luli.
  • 13:30: lunch at the beach.
  • 15:30: drive back, reaching your hotel around 17:00.

Sharm El Luli beach

The beach has pale sand and clear shallow water. It is a good spot for a gentle snorkel and an easy swim. You will find fewer people than at the main resort beaches, though you should still expect a handful of other visitors. Turtles are sometimes seen, but you cannot count on it.

Wildlife in the park

The park protects a wide range of desert and marine life. With luck you may see gazelles on the plain or a turtle off the beach. Birds are common near the mangroves. Do not expect a safari, because the animals are shy and the landscape is open.

Who will like it

  • Travellers who like scenery as much as swimming.
  • Families with school-age children who can manage a nine-hour day.
  • Anyone who wants a quiet day away from the main resorts.

Practical points

The day is shared, with up to 16 guests, so it feels more personal than a big coach tour. Drinks other than those provided and tips are extra. There is no shade on parts of the beach, so a hat is essential, and a long-sleeved top is helpful on the drive.
