Travel Guide

Cairo from Hurghada: fly or take the overnight coach?

Both options reach the pyramids in one day, but they are very different days: one hour in the air, or six hours each way on the road.

A day in Cairo from Hurghada is worth it for anyone who wants to see the Giza pyramids and will not otherwise visit the capital, and for most British holidaymakers it is the only realistic way to do it. If your budget allows, fly: it turns a punishing day into a long but manageable one. If it does not, the coach gets you there for less, and you pay in sleep.

The two trips are built differently, and the price gap comes from those differences. The flight trip is private, so the price per person falls as your party grows. The coach is shared with up to 40 guests, so you travel on a fixed timetable with everyone else.

The day trip by flight

A private transfer collects you at 04:00 and takes you to Hurghada Airport for a flight to Cairo at about 06:00. The flight takes about an hour, and your guide and driver meet you at Cairo Airport at around 07:30. You see the Giza Plateau from 08:45, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, lunch near Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum from 13:30.

The return flight is at about 19:30, followed by a private transfer to your hotel. The two flights are economy class and are booked by us, and flight times follow the airline schedule on your date. You will need your passport, because it is a domestic flight with an ID check.

The day trip by road

The coach picks up from 01:00 and drives to Cairo along the Red Sea coast road, about six hours with a rest stop. You reach Giza at about 08:00, see the three pyramids and the Sphinx, visit a museum from 11:30 and have lunch at 14:00. The coach leaves at 15:00 and returns about 21:00. It is the long, tiring version of the day, and honesty requires saying so.

  • Shared air-conditioned coach with up to 40 guests, and an English-speaking Egyptologist guide in Cairo.
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay.
  • The museum is either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, confirmed on booking.
  • Lunch, entrance tickets to Giza and the museum, and bottled water are included.

How the two days compare

On the flight trip you spend about six hours at sites and three hours in the air or at airports. On the coach trip you spend about the same time at sites and twelve hours on the road. Anyone who sleeps badly on coaches, has a bad back or travels with children should treat the flight as the trip, and the coach as a fallback.

What you see at Giza

At Giza the Great Pyramid is the largest of the three, with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure beside it. Both trips include the panorama point, where all three can be seen together, and the Great Sphinx. The flight trip adds the Valley Temple beside the Sphinx. Crowds build by mid-morning, which is one reason both days arrive early and start at the plateau before anything else.

The museum visit

The flight trip spends the afternoon in the Grand Egyptian Museum, starting with the Grand Staircase and then the Tutankhamun galleries. The museum is large, and a guide saves you from wandering. On the coach trip the museum is confirmed on booking and may be the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization instead, so check with us if the Tutankhamun collection is what you most want to see.

Is it worth it from a beach holiday?

It depends on what the holiday is for. If this is your only chance to see the pyramids, a day trip is a fair way to do it, but it is mostly a day of travel, with about six hours at the sites. If you can spare more time, ask our team about longer Cairo options. If you would rather stay near the coast, the Luxor trips are a shorter drive and cover a different part of ancient Egypt.

Before you go, check the practicalities. Wear shoes for sand and stone, and carry a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. Security checks apply at the airport and at the museum, so keep your bag small. Photography is generally allowed outdoors at Giza, but the rules inside the museum differ, and your guide will tell you what is permitted where.

Booking and visas

Hurghada is outside Sinai, so you already need the full Egypt visa, which carries a fee; check the current fee and rules on the official Egyptian e-visa site or GOV.UK travel advice before you fly. Book online up to 48 hours before, or send a request inside that window. You get a full refund if you cancel at least three days before. Open the trip pages for the current price and to compare group sizes.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Cairo from Hurghada too much?
It is long but doable. The flight version is about 15 hours and gives you real time at Giza and the museum. The coach version is about 20 hours and is tiring. If you are travelling with young children or you do not cope well with a missed night's sleep, choose the flight.
Do I need my passport for the flight trip?
Yes. The Hurghada–Cairo flights are domestic, but airlines in Egypt check ID, and you need your passport for the visa stamp anyway. Carry the original, not a copy. For the coach trip a copy of the passport is usually enough, but carrying the original is safer.
Can I go inside the Great Pyramid?
Not as part of the standard ticket. Both trips include entry to the Giza Plateau, but going inside a pyramid needs an extra ticket, bought on the day. The corridors are narrow and low, with little air, so it is not for anyone who dislikes enclosed spaces.
Which museum will I visit on the coach trip?
It is either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. We confirm which one when you book, as it depends on the day. The flight trip always includes the Grand Egyptian Museum, with its Grand Staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries.
What if my flight is delayed on the day?
Domestic flights can move, and the guide adjusts the order of the day to protect the main sites. We cannot control the airline. Keep your phone on, and stay in touch with your guide. If you want certainty, ask our team about the options before you book.
