Best time to go

The most comfortable months for this Cairo day tour are generally October to April, when daytime temperatures are milder and outdoor site visits at Giza and Saqqara are easier. May to September can be very hot, especially at open-air sites, so early departures are preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, museum hours, traffic and lunch arrangements may be affected, so timings should be confirmed in advance.

  • Licensed Egyptian tour operator
  • Private Egyptologist guide for the full day
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Cairo
  • Air-conditioned vehicle for transfers and sightseeing
  • Standard site entrance fees included
  • Private pacing and flexible time at each site where possible
  • 24/7 on-the-ground coordination for itinerary logistics
  • Experienced handling of museum timing and crowd management

02Overview

A first look

By early morning the limestone at Giza still feels cool underfoot and the scale of Khufu’s casing stones takes in the skyline before traffic and peak heat close in. We arrange to arrive while the light favours the pyramid faces, and our Egyptologists set the pace so questions and close-up observation are possible despite the crowds and limited shade.

We set aside 60–90 minutes at Saqqara rather than a brief walk-through so you can study the Step Pyramid and adjacent Old Kingdom reliefs at a measured pace. We also time the Grand Egyptian Museum visit to avoid the busiest slots, and hotel pickup and drop-off are arranged for every departure.

Note: Due to the duration of this tour, this tour is on request only and subject to attraction opening times at the date of planned travel.

Background

The facts

This private Cairo excursion combines four major archaeological areas: the Giza Plateau, Saqqara, Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The drive from central Cairo to the Giza Plateau is typically around 20–30 km depending on the hotel area, while Saqqara and Memphis lie further south-west of Cairo and are usually visited on the same route because they are close to each other. The day is normally arranged with hotel pickup, private transport and a licensed Egyptologist guide.

At Giza, the main monuments are the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty in the 26th century BCE, together with the Great Sphinx. The site covers a large desert plateau, so visitors should expect some walking on uneven ground and outdoor exposure. Standard entrance fees are included on this excursion, while the interior of the Great Pyramid of Khufu is optional and requires a separate ticket.

Saqqara is one of the most important Old Kingdom cemeteries in Egypt and is known for the Step Pyramid of Djoser, generally dated to the 27th century BCE and often described as the earliest large-scale stone monument in the world. Nearby tombs may also be visited depending on time and site access. Memphis, the ancient capital associated with early dynastic Egypt, preserves open-air remains including the colossus of Ramses II and other archaeological features.

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located near Giza, contains extensive collections of pharaonic artefacts and, subject to the museum’s operating schedule, displays linked to Tutankhamun material. Because museum access and gallery openings can change, the visit is usually timed around official entry conditions and crowd levels. Lunch and bottled water are provided, and the tour normally returns to Cairo after the final museum visit.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This excursion suits first-time visitors to Cairo, history enthusiasts, and travellers who want a structured introduction to Egypt’s most important ancient sites in one day. It is also suitable for couples, families with older children, and small private groups who prefer guided transport and flexible pacing rather than joining a large coach tour.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose a shorter visit if you prefer little walking or want to avoid several outdoor archaeological sites in one day. It is not ideal for travellers who need step-free access throughout.

What lingers

  • 01Private guided tour of the Giza Plateau: Khufu Pyramid exterior and the Great Sphinx, with our Egyptologist throughout.
  • 02Pre-booked Grand Egyptian Museum entry included; curated Tutankhamun galleries and archaeological displays explained by our Egyptologist.
  • 03See Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara – the 27th-century BCE mastaba-complex origin of large-scale stone architecture.
  • 04Visit ancient Memphis open-air museum: colossal statue remnants and the Alabaster Sphinx, adjacent to Saqqara.
  • 05Unlike large group buses, we use a private air-conditioned car, bottled water; Khufu interior excluded unless requested.

Honest assessment

The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.

Highlights

  • Compare Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure at the Giza Plateau
  • See Djoser’s Step Pyramid and nearby Old Kingdom tombs
  • Visit Memphis to view the colossus of Ramses II
  • Explore the Grand Egyptian Museum, subject to its schedule
  • Private Egyptologist commentary allows time to follow your interests

Things to Consider

  • Several site visits mean a full, busy day
  • Uneven archaeological ground can make walking tiring
  • Limited shade at outdoor sites, especially around midday
  • The Tutankhamun collection visit depends on the museum schedule

Worth knowing

How this compares

Unlike self-guided sightseeing, this private tour combines transport, site timing and Egyptologist commentary in one arranged itinerary. Compared with a standard half-day Giza visit, it includes Saqqara, Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum, making it a broader overview of Old Kingdom and museum highlights. It is also different from large group tours because the pacing can be adapted to the traveller’s interests and the day’s museum schedule.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

At Giza, take photographs of Khafre’s pyramid from more than one angle; its height and plateau position can make it appear tallest.

  2. 02

Wear shoes with a firm grip for uneven ground and sand around the pyramid fields and Saqqara tombs.

  3. 03

Carry small notes for personal purchases; gratuities are not included in the tour price.

  4. 04

Ask your Egyptologist which Saqqara tombs are open that day, as access can vary by site conditions.

Tailor it

Make it yours

As a private excursion, the order and time spent at each stop can be adjusted where site timings allow. Optional upgrades can include the interior ticket for the Great Pyramid of Khufu or additional tomb access at Saqqara, subject to availability and separate ticket fees. The day can also be tailored with a different lunch arrangement or a shortened museum visit if travellers prefer more time at Giza or Saqqara.

Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.

Where it fits

This full-day Cairo excursion fits best during a Cairo stay before or after a Nile cruise from Luxor or Aswan. It combines Giza with Saqqara and Memphis, so it covers more ground than a visit limited to the pyramids.

Strollers are difficult to use at the Giza Plateau and Saqqara, though they can be carried in the vehicle. Local restaurants can usually provide a high chair if requested in advance; availability should be confirmed for your date.

We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and provide a licensed Egyptologist, a private air‑conditioned car and hotel pickup in Cairo. Typical duration is three to four hours with flexible morning or afternoon starts to avoid heat and crowds. We do not include the Khufu pyramid interior by default; the interior ticket is optional and at extra cost because the crawl inside is narrow and not suitable for everyone. Pyramids Sound & Light Show, Giza Plateau

The Pyramids Sound & Light Show at the Giza Plateau projects narration and lighting onto Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange hotel pickup in a private car, reserved seating and an optional pre-show briefing by one of our Egyptologists. The production runs approximately 60 minutes with Arabic and English narration; additional languages vary by evening. We do not bundle pyramid interior visits with the show because pyramid interiors close earlier in the evening. Expect outdoor stone terraces and limited legroom; late-evening Cairo traffic noise can be audible, and we can reserve seats closer to the commentary speaker on request.
