Cairo keeps late hours. Cafes and shops stay open well past nine, families stroll the corniche, and the temperature drops to something pleasant. It is a good time to see the city from a different angle, particularly after a long day among monuments.
A guided evening in the city
The Cairo by night tour starts at about half past six. You go up the Cairo Tower for the view across the lights, drive along the Nile corniche and over Qasr El Nil Bridge, then walk the lanes of Khan el-Khalili. The evening ends with tea at a traditional cafe in the bazaar, and you are back at your hotel by half past ten. The tower ticket and tea are included.
A food walk
If you would rather eat, the Cairo food tour starts at six. You try koshari in downtown Cairo, falafel and ful at a street counter with fresh juice, grilled kofta or chicken at a local restaurant, and sweets with mint tea at a cafe. All tastings and soft drinks are included, and no alcohol is served.
Other evening ideas
A dinner cruise on the Nile combines a meal with views of the lit-up bridges, with music or entertainment on board. The sound and light show at the Pyramids tells the story of the site in lights and narration after dark, and can be a pleasant end to a day at Giza. We do not link these here, but we can help you arrange them when you plan your stay.
- Cairo Tower for a wide view of the city.
- The corniche for a walk beside the Nile.
- Khan el-Khalili for tea and browsing.
- A food walk for a hearty, social evening.
- A Nile dinner cruise or the Pyramids light show for a set-piece night.
Fitting it into your stay
An evening tour pairs well with a day at the Pyramids or the older pyramid fields. Rest in the afternoon and head out after the worst of the heat. Avoid scheduling a long evening before an early start the next day.
What to wear and how it feels
Evenings are mild for much of the year and cool in winter, so bring a light jacket from November to March. Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes of Khan el-Khalili are uneven and crowded, and light clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is both comfortable and respectful. Traders in the bazaar can be persistent. A calm, polite no is accepted, and your guide stays with you throughout.
What catches people out
Cairo traffic does not ease much after dark, so a short distance can take a while, and the programme allows for that. The tower lift can queue at busy times, and views are clearest on dry, still evenings. Dinner is not part of the Cairo by night tour, so eat a late lunch or plan a meal afterwards. Evening starts are timed for sunset, which shifts with the season, so the pick-up time may move a little.
Getting around safely
Evening tours are done by private car, so you do not need to hail taxis or navigate unfamiliar streets after dark. Your driver waits while you walk the bazaar, and your guide stays beside you. Keep valuables in a zipped bag, and carry only what you need. If you are travelling with children, tell us their ages so we can adjust the pace.
