Best time to go

October to April generally offers the most comfortable conditions for walking in Cairo, with cooler mornings and lower midday temperatures than the summer months. May to September can be hot, particularly around exposed viewpoints; early departures are preferable. During Ramadan, opening hours and local activity patterns may change, while major public holidays can bring heavier traffic and visitor numbers.

  • Discovery Tours Egypt is a licensed Egyptian tour operator.
  • The excursion includes a private Egyptologist guide for six hours.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off within the specified Cairo city limits and pickup zones are included.
  • An air-conditioned vehicle with driver is provided for transfers between sites.
  • Standard entrance fees for the listed attractions are included.

02Overview

A first look

From the Citadel of Saladin, Cairo spreads out beneath the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with the city’s traffic softened by height and the Giza Plateau visible on a clear day. Inside, alabaster catches the daylight before the route turns towards Old Cairo, where narrow lanes lead to churches, carved stone and neighbourhood life.

Our Egyptologist connects the Mosque of Muhammad Ali with the city’s Ottoman chapter, then explains why Abu Serga and the Hanging Church matter to Coptic tradition. We arrange the hotel pickup, private air-conditioned vehicle, entrance fees and return within Cairo’s specified zones. Expect uneven ground, steps and modest clothing at religious sites.

Background

The facts

This private six-hour Cairo excursion combines the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Old Cairo and selected streets of historic Islamic Cairo. Saladin began constructing the Cairo Citadel in 1176 CE on Mokattam Hill as part of the city’s defensive system. The complex provides elevated views towards central Cairo and, on clear days, the Giza Plateau. The Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built between 1830 and 1848 during the rule of Muhammad Ali Pasha; its Ottoman-influenced design and extensive alabaster cladding are its principal architectural features.

The Coptic Cairo section includes the Hanging Church, formally known as the Church of the Virgin Mary, Al-Muallaqa, and the Church of St Sergius and St Bacchus, commonly called Abu Serga. The Hanging Church is associated with the Roman fortress area of Babylon and is named for its position above earlier structures. Abu Serga is traditionally connected with the Holy Family’s journey through Egypt, although the tradition is religious and historical rather than independently verified by contemporary records.

The itinerary also includes a guided walk through parts of Islamic Cairo, a historic urban area containing mosques, madrasas, mausoleums and Mamluk-era buildings alongside active local bazaars. The Citadel and Old Cairo are separate areas of the city, so the excursion uses an air-conditioned vehicle between principal stops, with walking required inside the sites and along uneven surfaces. Standard entrance fees to the listed attractions are included; premium or optional entrances are not.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This excursion suits first-time Cairo visitors, architecture and religious-history enthusiasts, and travellers who want a focused introduction to the city beyond the Giza Plateau. It is appropriate for most adults and older children who can manage approximately six hours of sightseeing, vehicle transfers and walking on uneven historic surfaces.

Maybe not, if

  • It is not ideal for travellers who need step-free access or find uneven historic surfaces difficult. Those wanting a slow visit to one site should choose a shorter, more focused outing.

What lingers

  • 01Private tour covering the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with panoramic views over Cairo.
  • 02Visit the neighbouring Sultan Hassan Mosque-Madrasa and Al-Rifa'i Mosque, two of Cairo's finest Mamluk-era buildings.
  • 03Discover Old Cairo’s Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) and Church of St Sergius (Abu Serga).
  • 04Typical tour length six hours door to door, with a relaxed lunch stop in Old Cairo.
  • 05Unlike large coach tours, we operate this privately with a licensed Egyptologist and a private, air-conditioned car.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Unlike a group walking tour, the private option includes hotel pickup and drop-off within the specified Cairo zones, a dedicated Egyptologist guide and vehicle transfers between the main areas.

Children & families

Children are welcome with an accompanying adult, and this private excursion has no set minimum age. The child price varies according to age and vehicle capacity, and will be confirmed before payment. Steps, uneven pavements and narrow lanes can make strollers difficult to manage, so a compact, foldable model is more practical than a full-size one. High chairs are not usually applicable to this sightseeing trip, and meals are not included.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01How long does the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour take?
The private excursion lasts about six hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. The route covers Islamic Cairo, the Citadel of Saladin and Old Cairo, with time at the named sites along the way. The exact pace and stop lengths can vary with traffic and the day’s arrangements.
  2. 02Where does hotel pickup take place for the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour?
Pickup and drop-off are available at hotels within Cairo city limits, subject to the specified pickup zones. Your driver meets you at the agreed time and place, usually the hotel lobby. If your accommodation is outside those zones, ask us to confirm whether a transfer can be arranged; it is not included.
  3. 03What is included in the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour?
The tour includes a private Egyptologist guide, an air-conditioned vehicle with driver, bottled water and entrance fees to the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Sultan Hassan Mosque and Al-Rifa’i Mosque. Visits to the Hanging Church and St Sergius are included; these churches typically have free entry or request a donation.
  4. 04What does the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour exclude?
Meals, personal purchases, gratuities and optional or premium entrances not listed among the inclusions are not covered. The itinerary refers to a lunch stop, but the meal itself is excluded. Transfers from outside the specified Cairo pickup zones are also not included, so please check your hotel’s location before booking.
  5. 05How much walking is involved, and is the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour accessible?
Expect walking on uneven historic surfaces, and stairs at some sites. The route into the Hanging Church includes 29 steps, and Old Cairo has stone lanes and pedestrian areas. A private tour allows the pace to be discussed with your guide. We’ll confirm step-free access before you book.
  6. 06Is the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour suitable for children?
Children can join this private excursion, but the route includes several historic sites, walking and steps. The 29 steps at the Hanging Church may be tiring for younger children, and pushchair access is not confirmed. Tell us the children’s ages when enquiring so we can discuss pacing and any practical needs.
  7. 07What clothing and items should I bring for the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour?
Wear comfortable shoes with a firm grip, as some surfaces are uneven and the Hanging Church has steps. Choose modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for mosque visits. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sun cream for exposed areas at the Citadel; bottled water is provided during the tour.
  8. 08Can I take photographs during the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour?
Photography rules can differ between the Citadel, mosques and churches, so check with your Egyptologist before taking pictures indoors. Flash or photography in particular areas may be restricted, and some locations may charge separately for photography. Please respect signs and worshippers, especially inside active religious sites.
  9. 09When is the best time of year to take the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour?
Cairo’s cooler months, roughly October to April, are generally more comfortable for walking between historic sites. Winter sun brings milder days, although conditions can still vary. An earlier start can help avoid the strongest midday heat at the exposed Citadel; ask us to confirm the departure time for your date.
  10. 10What is the route through Islamic and Coptic Cairo?
The route links the Mamluk mosques of Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i with the Citadel of Saladin, then continues to Old Cairo. At the Citadel, visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali; in Old Cairo, see the Hanging Church and St Sergius, also called Abu Serga. The crypt at Abu Serga is traditionally associated with the Holy Family’s stay in Egypt.
