Best time to go

Late afternoon or sunset is the most comfortable choice, especially from October to April, when Aswan’s daytime temperatures are generally around 23–30°C, varying by month. Summer afternoons can exceed 35°C, so avoid midday departures; sunset times change through the year. During Ramadan and major holidays, local operating hours and transfer times may need adjustment.

  • Discovery Tours Egypt holds a licence as an Egyptian tour operator.
  • The felucca is crewed by local sailors.
  • Local transport partners arrange hotel collection and return.
  • An air-conditioned vehicle is used for transfers where required.
  • Standard entrance fees are included.

02Overview

A first look

Late afternoon on the Nile in Aswan brings long shadows on the water, a steady breeze in the sails and the gull-call rhythm along the Corniche. On board you sit on low cushions, frame Elephantine Island's sandstone outline through your lens, and feel the felucca slow as the wind shifts toward sunset.

This is a two-hour, wind-powered sail timed for low-angle light; unlike motorboat excursions, the felucca is quieter and better for photography, though speed and route vary with wind. We arrange pickup from hotels within approximately 5 km of the Corniche, coordinate the sailing with our local partners, and our Egyptologists can brief you before departure.

Background

The facts

A felucca is a traditional Egyptian sailing boat propelled by wind. This Aswan excursion is a short leisure trip on the Nile, with a sunset departure available on request.

The ride lasts about two hours. Hotel pickup and return are arranged for stays approximately within 5 km of the Aswan Corniche, with a vehicle transfer to and from the dock where required. The route may pass Elephantine Island; a visit or photo stop depends on wind, water level and the day’s schedule and is not guaranteed.

Aswan lies on the Nile in southern Egypt. Its river islands and views of both banks are seen from the water; the excursion does not include a specific archaeological site visit or historical date.

Departure times depend on the requested sunset timing and local conditions. Midday departures are generally avoided in summer because of the heat, particularly from May to September. Standard entrance fees are included; meals, drinks, gratuities and a private guide are excluded unless separately arranged.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This suits couples, solo travellers and families with school-age children who want a gentle Nile outing in Aswan, particularly those interested in photography or traditional boats. It involves little walking, but you need to step between the dock and boat and sit outdoors for about two hours.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose a motorboat trip if you need a faster crossing or cannot manage the step between the dock and felucca. The outdoor seating and close supervision needed near the water may also make this difficult with very young children.

What lingers

  • 01Private felucca from Aswan Corniche; 60–90-minute sail around Kitchener's Island and Elephantine Island at sunset.
  • 02Our crew serve hot mint tea and bottled water aboard; restrooms available before boarding on the Corniche.
  • 03Close views of Philae Island temple complex from the water; please respect mosque prayer times ashore.
  • 04We do not run shared motorboat trips; every felucca is private with an experienced Nile helmsman.
  • 05Limited shade and occasional choppy water at midday; best taken early morning or at sunset.
  • 06Option to combine with Aswan High Dam visit; 10–15 minute drive from the Corniche, entrance fees separate.

Honest assessment

The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.

Highlights

  • Quiet, wind-powered travel offers a slower pace than motorboat excursions.
  • Sunset departures bring softer light and cooler conditions than midday.
  • Elephantine Island may be included for a brief stop or photographs.
  • Little walking is required beyond boarding and leaving the felucca.
  • Hotel pickup is available within approximately 5 km of Aswan Corniche.

Things to Consider

  • Outdoor seating means limited shelter from sun and wind.
  • Dock and boat access requires a step and careful footing.
  • Elephantine Island stops depend on tide and the day’s schedule.
  • Two hours seated outdoors may not suit restless young children.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Most operators' motorboat excursions use engines; this trip uses a wind-powered felucca, which travels more slowly and quietly. Unlike full sightseeing programmes in Aswan, it centres on the river, and a private guide is not included by default.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

Request sunset when booking, as the departure is timed to your preference and local conditions.

  2. 02

Keep the Elephantine Island stop flexible; wind, water level and schedule affect whether it is possible.

  3. 03

For summer visits, choose a later departure rather than midday to limit exposure to Aswan's heat.

  4. 04

Bring water and sun protection for the open boat, particularly during warmer months.

Tailor it

Make it yours

Private or shared arrangements may be available, depending on availability. You can request sunset timing, pickup or drop-off arrangements within the stated hotel area, and a brief stop near Elephantine Island when tide and schedule permit. A private guide can be added at extra cost; meals and drinks are not included.

Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.

Where it fits

This fits between visits to Philae Temple and the Aswan High Dam, or as a quieter late-afternoon pause before continuing to Luxor. Unlike motorboat trips, a felucca depends on wind, so the route and time at Elephantine Island can vary.

Before you go

What to pack & wear

Children & families

The minimum age is 4 years. Children aged 4 to 11 may qualify for a reduced price where available; children under 4 can travel free only when sharing an adult’s seat. Strollers are impractical on the uneven dock and narrow gangplank, so use a child carrier or be prepared to carry a small child. Car seats can be requested for the transfer vehicle, but are not used on the felucca. Tell us each child’s age when booking so we can confirm the applicable price and vehicle arrangements.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01How long does an Aswan sunset felucca trip last?
The felucca ride lasts about two hours. If you request a sunset departure, the timing is arranged around the evening light, subject to the day’s schedule. The ride is a gentle outing on the Nile rather than a guided sightseeing tour, and a private guide is not included unless arranged separately.
  2. 02Where can I get picked up for the felucca ride in Aswan?
Pickup and return are arranged for hotels approximately within 5 km of the Aswan Corniche. Please give us your hotel name when enquiring so we can check whether it falls within the service area. The transfer to the dock is by air-conditioned vehicle where required.
  3. 03What is included in the Aswan felucca ride?
The arrangement includes the felucca ride and transfers to and from the dock. Local sailors crew the traditional, wind-powered boat. A private guide is not part of the standard arrangement. We'll confirm any entrance fees and whether a private guide can be added.
  4. 04What is excluded from the sunset felucca ride?
Meals, drinks, crew and driver gratuities, personal expenses and optional extras are not included. A private guide is also excluded unless requested and paid for separately. Bring any refreshments you would like, and check the product details for the exact entrance fees covered.
  5. 05Is the felucca ride accessible for travellers with limited mobility?
Boarding requires stepping between the dock and the boat, and the felucca has limited facilities. This may be difficult for anyone who cannot manage a step or needs level access. Tell us about mobility needs before booking so we can discuss the boarding arrangement with the local team; access cannot be guaranteed.
  6. 06Can children join the Aswan sunset felucca ride?
Children can generally join, but they must be supervised throughout the ride because the boat has an open deck and is on the Nile. No specific age policy is provided, so please share children’s ages when enquiring. We can then confirm the arrangement with the local team.
  7. 07What clothing and items should I take on a felucca trip in Aswan?
Wear comfortable clothes and secure footwear, and bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the Egyptian sun. A light layer is useful on the river in cooler months, especially after sunset. There is no stated dress code for this boat ride; modest clothing is appropriate when visiting religious sites elsewhere.
  8. 08Can I take photographs during the felucca ride?
Yes, you can take photographs during the ride. The wind-powered felucca moves more quietly than a motorboat, which can make it easier to frame views of the riverbank. Keep cameras and phones secure on the open boat, and be considerate when photographing local people.
  9. 09Which time of year is best for a sunset felucca trip in Aswan?
October to April is generally cooler for spending time on the Nile. The ride can operate year-round, but summer heat is a consideration, so midday departures are avoided in summer. A sunset departure, when requested and available, offers evening light and cooler conditions than the middle of the day.
  10. 10Can the felucca ride stop at Elephantine Island?
A short visit or photo stop at Elephantine Island may be possible when the tide and schedule allow. It is not guaranteed on every ride. The island sits in the Nile at Aswan, and the view from the water is part of the outing even when conditions do not permit a stop.

Aswan High Dam & Unfinished Obelisk, Half-Day Tour

This private half-day (approx. 3–4 hours) tour visits the Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk with one of our Egyptologists. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange private transfer from Aswan hotels or the Nile port. We don't run large coach groups; using a private car lets you set the pace and avoid fixed coach timetables common on cruise-ship excursions. Expect a clear contrast: the High Dam is 20th-century concrete engineering, while the Unfinished Obelisk shows ancient stone-working in situ. Trade-offs: the dam area has limited shade at midday and the quarry requires walking on uneven rock and steps.

Aswan: High Dam, Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk Day Tour

This private day tour visits the Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple on Agilkia Island and the Unfinished Obelisk quarry. Philae is part of the 'Nubian Monuments' UNESCO World Heritage Site; the temple was relocated to Agilkia during 1972–1980. The Unfinished Obelisk was intended to reach about 42 metres and would have weighed roughly 1,200 tonnes. We don't run group-bus tours; the visit is by private car, with a short motorboat transfer and one of our Egyptologists. Unlike quick cruise-boat calls, our schedule allows more time ashore to inspect inscriptions and quarrying marks. Standard site fees, motorboat crossing and transfers are included; gratuities are not. Expect limited shade on Agilkia Island, strong sun at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan (Day Tour)

Travel by road from Aswan to Abu Simbel for a visit to the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the adjacent Temple of Nefertari. The Great Temple’s façade is guarded by four seated colossi, each about 20 metres high. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Both temples were relocated in the 1960s to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam. The road route offers views of the desert and Lake Nasser that a flight does not. Abu Simbel entrance fees are included; hotel transfers, lunch and drinks are not included unless your booking confirmation says otherwise.
