Best time to go
The most comfortable months are typically October to April, when daytime temperatures in Aswan are lower and site visits are easier. In summer, especially June to August, temperatures can be very high, so early morning or late-afternoon departures are usually preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and visitor flow may vary, so advance planning is advisable.

02Overview
A first look
Morning light on Aswan skims the granite faces and the air carries a dry river smell as you stand at the High Dam viewpoint listening to the Nile’s broad current and the hum of distant pumps. At the northern quarry the stone underfoot is warm and granular, ancient tool marks rise beside the vertical cut where the Unfinished Obelisk still rests in situ, its intended size visible by the surrounding quarry scars.
We keep this as a short, private outing rather than a hurried coach stop, which reduces waits and lets you move at a steady pace. We arrange hotel or Nile-cruise pickup within Aswan city limits, and our Egyptologists can join the visit if requested at booking.
Background
The facts
The High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk half-day tour in Aswan focuses on two sites that illustrate different periods of Egyptian history: the modern Aswan High Dam and the ancient granite quarry at the Unfinished Obelisk. The Aswan High Dam was constructed between 1960 and 1970 and inaugurated in 1970. It impounds Lake Nasser, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, and the viewpoint is typically reached by a short drive of about 3–4 km south of central Aswan.
The Unfinished Obelisk lies in the northern granite quarry in Aswan, where a pharaonic obelisk was being carved directly from the bedrock. If completed, it would have measured about 42 metres. The quarry site is roughly 2 km north of central Aswan, which keeps road transfers between the two stops relatively short and makes the excursion practical as a half-day outing.
Because the visit is short, it is usually scheduled with either a morning or late-afternoon departure to reduce exposure to the hottest part of the day. Standard site entrance fees are normally included, and the route is suitable for travellers staying in central Aswan hotels or on Nile cruises within Aswan city limits. A licensed Egyptologist can be added on request at booking for guests who want historical interpretation during the visit.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- This excursion suits first-time visitors to Aswan, history enthusiasts, and travellers who want a compact sightseeing programme rather than a longer day out. It is also suitable for adults and older children who are comfortable with short walks and brief stops at archaeological and engineering sites.
Maybe not, if
- Choose another outing if you need step-free access throughout or want a full day of sightseeing. The quarry has uneven surfaces and little shade, and summer visits can be very hot.
What lingers
- 01Visit Aswan High Dam, completed 1970; our Egyptologist explains hydroelectric impact and Nile flood control.
- 02See the Unfinished Obelisk in the northern quarry; visible tool marks show ancient granite-working techniques.
- 03Includes private car transfer, our Egyptologist and site entrance fees; gratuities and special permits excluded.
- 04Short walk over uneven stone and low shade at the quarry; bring sun protection and sturdy shoes.
- 05We avoid large coach groups; we schedule morning departures to beat midday heat and cruise-boat crowds.
- 06Typical duration three to four hours with hotel pickup in central Aswan; flexible timings on request.

Worth knowing
How this compares
Unlike a full-day Aswan sightseeing programme, this excursion is designed to cover just two key sites in about 3 to 4 hours. That makes it a practical option for travellers with limited time, shore-excursion schedules, or those who prefer a shorter outing in hot weather. Compared with group coach tours, the private format gives more control over departure time and pace at each stop.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01What is the duration of the Aswan tour of the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk?
The private excursion usually takes three to four hours, including travel between the two sites. The visit focuses on the Aswan High Dam viewpoint and the Unfinished Obelisk in the northern granite quarry, rather than adding a longer route. Morning and late-afternoon departures can help limit time in the strongest heat.02Can you pick me up from my hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan?
Pickup and drop-off are available from hotels and Nile cruises within Aswan city limits. We confirm the meeting point and departure time when you book. If you are staying or berthed outside the city limits, tell us your location first; an additional transfer charge may apply.03What is included in the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk tour?
The booking includes a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver, standard entrance fees for the Aswan High Dam viewpoint and Unfinished Obelisk, and bottled water during transfers. A licensed Egyptologist is optional and must be requested and booked in advance. Meals, personal expenses and gratuities are not included.04Is the tour accessible for visitors with limited mobility?
The Unfinished Obelisk site has uneven stone surfaces and walking is needed around the quarry, so it may be difficult for visitors who use mobility aids. The High Dam viewpoint is generally more straightforward, but access conditions can vary. Please share your mobility requirements before booking so we can discuss what is manageable.05Is this Aswan tour suitable for children?
The three-to-four-hour duration can be manageable for families, but children will need to walk at the Unfinished Obelisk quarry. Stone surfaces are uneven, and adults should supervise children throughout the visit, particularly at viewpoints. Consider a morning or late-afternoon departure to avoid the hottest part of the day.06What should I wear and bring for the Aswan High Dam tour?
Wear comfortable walking shoes with a firm sole, as the quarry has uneven stone underfoot. Bring sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, plus water for time outside the vehicle. Modest dress is not specifically required at these sites, though lightweight clothing that covers the shoulders can help in the sun.07Can I take photographs at the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk?
Photography is part of the visit at the High Dam viewpoint and the Unfinished Obelisk quarry, but rules may differ by area or change on the day. Follow any signs and instructions from site staff, particularly around restricted or security-sensitive areas. Ask before photographing workers or other visitors.08When is the best time to take this tour in Aswan?
Morning or late afternoon is usually preferable because Aswan can be very hot around midday. These departure windows also offer softer light across Lake Nasser and the quarry. Conditions vary by season, so bring sun protection even on a cooler day and confirm your departure time when booking.09Is a licensed Egyptologist included in the tour?
A licensed Egyptologist is not provided as standard, though we can organise one if you ask and book this option ahead of time. If you travel without an Egyptologist, your driver will provide transport, not historical commentary at the sites. Any gratuity for the driver or guide is optional and not included.10What can I see at the Unfinished Obelisk?
The Unfinished Obelisk remains attached to the bedrock in Aswan’s northern granite quarry, showing where work stopped during its carving. Had it been completed, it would have measured about 42 metres. The quarry also gives a direct view of ancient stone-working traces; the site includes uneven ground and exposed areas.

Aswan: High Dam, Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk Day Tour
This private day tour visits the Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple on Agilkia Island and the Unfinished Obelisk quarry. Philae is part of the 'Nubian Monuments' UNESCO World Heritage Site; the temple was relocated to Agilkia during 1972–1980. The Unfinished Obelisk was intended to reach about 42 metres and would have weighed roughly 1,200 tonnes. We don't run group-bus tours; the visit is by private car, with a short motorboat transfer and one of our Egyptologists. Unlike quick cruise-boat calls, our schedule allows more time ashore to inspect inscriptions and quarrying marks. Standard site fees, motorboat crossing and transfers are included; gratuities are not. Expect limited shade on Agilkia Island, strong sun at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan (Day Tour)
Travel by road from Aswan to Abu Simbel for a visit to the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the adjacent Temple of Nefertari. The Great Temple’s façade is guarded by four seated colossi, each about 20 metres high. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Both temples were relocated in the 1960s to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam. The road route offers views of the desert and Lake Nasser that a flight does not. Abu Simbel entrance fees are included; hotel transfers, lunch and drinks are not included unless your booking confirmation says otherwise.

AswanAbu Simbel by Plane from Aswan, Day Tour
Abu Simbel lies about 280 km south of Aswan, where the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari face Lake Nasser. This full-day excursion uses a domestic flight of about 40 to 50 minutes each way, followed by a guided visit with an English-speaking Egyptologist. Allow roughly two to three hours at the temples, subject to flight and security timings. The monuments form part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. Compared with the 3.5 to 4-hour road journey each way, flying leaves more of the day for the site. Services are provided by Discovery Tours Egypt, a licensed Egyptian tour operator.
