02Overview
A first look
The Valley of the Kings is the New Kingdom royal necropolis on Luxor’s West Bank. This ticket permits entry to three selected tombs; Tutankhamun and Seti I require separate premium tickets.
Background
The facts
The Valley of the Kings is the principal royal burial ground of Egypt’s New Kingdom, used from around the 16th to the 11th centuries BCE. It lies on Luxor’s West Bank, within the Theban necropolis opposite the modern city.
More than 60 tombs and chambers are known in the valley. This entry ticket grants admission to the burial area and three tombs allocated on the issued ticket. Open tombs change over time, and premium access to Tutankhamun’s tomb or Seti I’s tomb is not included in the standard ticket.
The Theban necropolis includes the Valley of the Queens and the mortuary temples of Hatshepsut and Ramesses III. The Valley of the Kings is part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis, recognised for its remains from ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom.
The visitor area is reached by road from Luxor’s West Bank ferry landing and nearby monuments. Opening hours and tomb availability vary seasonally, so check the official site before visiting. Expect security screening at the entrance; photography rules vary and should be checked there. The ticket is emailed as a PDF after booking. Print it if unsure whether screen display is accepted.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- This ticket suits adults and older children interested in New Kingdom burial customs, tomb decoration and pharaonic archaeology. It works well for independent visitors comfortable walking on uneven paths in Luxor’s heat and choosing which of the three allocated tombs to visit.
Maybe not, if
- It is not a good choice for visitors who need step-free access or a pushchair-friendly site. Anyone wanting Tutankhamun’s or Seti I’s tomb should arrange that premium access separately.
What lingers
- 01Admission to the Valley of the Kings (Luxor West Bank) includes entry to any three standard tombs.
- 02Tutankhamun and Seti I premium tombs are excluded; they require separate tickets at the site or advance booking.
- 03Our ticket suits a focused visit; we do not bundle this with cruise ship shore-excursions or group coach tours.
- 04Expect uneven ancient stone and limited shade; bring sturdy shoes, a hat, and at least 1 litre water.
- 05Visiting early morning reduces heat and crowding; our Egyptologists often recommend starting before 08:00 where possible.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Standard admission covers three allocated tombs; premium tombs such as Tutankhamun’s and Seti I’s are separate purchases. Unlike a guided visit, this is an entry ticket only, with no guide or transport included.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01What does the Valley of the Kings ticket include?
The standard ticket grants entry to the Valley of the Kings and access to three tombs. The Valley is on Luxor's West Bank and forms part of the Theban Necropolis UNESCO World Heritage Site. Premium tombs (for example Tutankhamun and Seti I) are excluded and require separate tickets; photography and video rules vary by tomb. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and, for private bookings, pre-book the three tombs on your behalf to reduce queuing.02Does this ticket let me visit Tutankhamun's tomb?
No – the Tutankhamun tomb (KV62) requires a separate entrance ticket. It is sold separately from the standard three-tomb ticket and may be subject to availability or temporary closure. If you want KV62 we can request the separate ticket in advance, but allocation is controlled by the site and cannot be guaranteed until issued.03How long should I allow for a visit to the Valley of the Kings?
Plan roughly two to three hours on site to see the Valley and three tombs. This estimate includes walking between tombs and a short briefing from your guide. Early morning visits reduce heat and crowds; afternoons have limited shade and higher temperatures. We confirm pickup times and a sensible visit order when we finalise your booking.04Are the tombs accessible for people with limited mobility?
The tombs are not fully accessible; most routes include uneven stone, stairs and narrow passages. Wheelchair users will find entry to many tombs impossible and ramps are generally absent. We can adapt an itinerary with viewpoints, the Valley overlook or alternative West Bank sites. Please tell us mobility needs at enquiry so we can propose practical options.05Can I take photographs inside the tombs?
Photography rules vary by tomb; many tombs prohibit flash and certain equipment. Some tombs ban photography entirely and video or tripod use frequently requires a separate permit or on-site approval. Always follow the inspector and site signage; rules are enforced and can change without notice. We brief guests on the day and advise leaving large equipment at your vehicle.06Do I need a guide to visit the Valley of the Kings?
You do not strictly need a guide, but a licensed Egyptologist adds historical context and manages tomb selection and timing. Our Egyptologists explain scenes, pharaonic attributions and conservation issues inside tombs. Unlike large shared coach tours, we organise tomb entries to reduce queuing and to control time inside each tomb. If you prefer to explore independently, tell us and we will adjust the plan.

LuxorLuxor Museum – Entrance Ticket & Egyptologist
This ticket grants access to Luxor Museum, the compact museum close to Luxor Temple that displays New Kingdom sculpture and funerary objects. We recommend 60–90 minutes for a focused visit; our Egyptologists often pair it with a late-afternoon Luxor Temple visit to avoid cruise-ship crowds. Unlike large coach itineraries, we schedule early-or-late museum times to reduce overlap with cruise passengers. Trade-offs: the galleries are small and can feel busy during peak cruise season, and seating is limited. Standard entrance is included; we can add a private licensed guide and private car on request.

LuxorLuxor Temple (East Bank, Luxor)
We arrange timed visits to Luxor Temple on Luxor’s east bank; the standard entrance ticket is included. The core buildings date mainly to Amenhotep III and Ramesses II and the site forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologists explain the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Ramesses II pylon and later Roman alterations. Distinctive POV: unlike coach itineraries that often rush, we schedule 60–90 minutes so you can walk the colonnade and photograph at your own pace. Trade-offs: expect crowds at sunset, limited shade at midday and uneven stone underfoot; modest dress is required.

LuxorMortuary Temple of Ramses III (Medinet Habu) – Luxor West Bank
Medinet Habu is the mortuary temple complex of Ramses III on Luxor's West Bank. Our Egyptologists lead the visit and point out the campaign reliefs, including the Sea Peoples scenes and detailed ship depictions. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and include the standard entrance fee. We prefer to include Medinet Habu as a 90-minute stand-alone visit paired with the Ramesseum, rather than a brief coach stop; this allows time for close-up study of the reliefs and the large hypostyle hall. Expect limited shade at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot; bring sun protection and sensible shoes.
