Best time to go

October to April is generally more comfortable for walking, with daytime temperatures often around 20 to 30°C; visit early to avoid stronger midday sun and busier periods. Summer days can exceed 40°C, so an early arrival matters. Check current opening information during Ramadan and major public holidays, when routines and crowd levels may change.

02Overview

A first look

Karnak Temple complex on Luxor’s East Bank is chiefly dedicated to Amun-Re. The Sacred Lake lies within the precinct and the site forms part of Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Background

The facts

Karnak Temple Complex is an extensive ancient religious site on the east bank of the Nile in northern Luxor. Its principal religious focus was Amun-Re, and the complex includes the Precinct of Amun-Re, the Great Hypostyle Hall, pylons, obelisks, chapels and the Sacred Lake. This single-entry ticket grants admission to the complex, including the Sacred Lake.

The Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 papyrus-form columns, with major construction under Seti I and Ramses II. The remains of the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes connect the history of Karnak with Luxor Temple, a short distance to the south on Luxor’s east bank.

Construction and expansion took place across the Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom and later periods. Karnak’s monuments reflect successive building programmes by ancient Egyptian rulers, including Seti I and Ramses II.

Opening hours and last admission vary by season, so check the official times before visiting; arriving early can help avoid the heat. The ticket is delivered by email as a PDF after booking confirmation. Check whether a printed copy is required and print it if in doubt. Photography rules may vary, so check at the entrance.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This entry ticket suits independent travellers, history enthusiasts and photographers who want to explore Karnak at their own pace. It is a good fit for adults and older children comfortable with several hours of walking over uneven stone.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose another visit if you need step-free access throughout or find uneven paving difficult. Midday summer heat can also make a long visit tiring.

What lingers

  • 01Includes entry to Karnak Temples and the Sacred Lake; site part of Ancient Thebes UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • 02Guided 90–120 minute circuit by our Egyptologists, not a self-guided entry common at peak times.
  • 03Karnak lies 2.5 km north of Luxor Temple; transfer by car is about ten minutes along the Corniche.
  • 04Visit early morning to avoid heat and crowds; many visitors arrive after 10:00 and temperatures climb rapidly.
  • 05Photography permitted across the complex; tripod and drone rules change–confirm restrictions with our guide on arrival.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Most basic Karnak entry tickets cover admission to the complex; this ticket also specifies access to the Sacred Lake. Unlike a guided visit, admission is self-guided, with an audio guide or professional guide available to arrange separately.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Are tickets to Karnak Temple and the Sacred Lake included?
Yes – the standard Karnak Temple entrance fee, including access to the Sacred Lake, is included with this ticket. Special experiences (for example the Sound and Light show, commercial filming permits or exclusive after-hours access) are not included unless requested. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator we handle ticketing and guide allocation as part of your booking.
  2. 02What are the opening hours for Karnak Temple?
Karnak Temple's public opening hours vary seasonally; check confirmed times for your travel dates. The site typically opens at first light and closes late afternoon, but hours change during Ramadan and national holidays. We can often schedule early or late visits, where permitted, to avoid heat and cruise-ship crowds.
  3. 03Do you offer private guided visits or large coach tours to Karnak?
We operate private, Egyptologist-led visits rather than large coach-group tours. Unlike coach-based day trips, our visits can start early or late to reduce crowds and allow more time at the Hypostyle Hall and the Sacred Lake. Our Egyptologists explain the Amun‑Re complex in context rather than rushing through the site.
  4. 04How long should I allow to visit Karnak Temple and the Sacred Lake?
Allow 1.5–3 hours to see the main courtyards, the Hypostyle Hall and the Sacred Lake. A focused walk-through takes about 90 minutes; an in-depth, Egyptologist-led visit usually requires closer to three hours. Add extra time if you plan to visit Luxor Temple the same day or attend the Sound and Light show.
  5. 05Is Karnak Temple wheelchair accessible?
Access is partial: the main approach and some courtyards are relatively level but many areas have uneven stone and steps. There are loose stones, sand and thresholds that restrict full wheelchair movement, and some inner zones remain difficult to access. We can plan a reduced-walking itinerary and a close drop-off, but full independent wheelchair access throughout the complex cannot be guaranteed.
  6. 06What should I wear and bring for a visit to Karnak Temple?
Bring sun protection, plenty of water and comfortable walking shoes; cover shoulders and knees for temple modesty. The site has limited shade at midday and large exposed courtyards, so a wide-brim hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are essential. Good-grip shoes help on uneven ancient stone and a light scarf is useful if you prefer extra sun protection or modesty.
  7. 07Can I take photographs at Karnak Temple and the Sacred Lake?
Personal photography is generally permitted across Karnak Temple and the Sacred Lake; drone and commercial photography require permits. Tripods and professional equipment may need prior authorisation and flash use can be restricted in some areas. We can arrange commercial or drone permits in advance if you need them for professional shoots.

Temple of Edfu – Entrance Ticket & Visitor Options

The Temple of Edfu is a Ptolemaic sanctuary built between 237 and 57 BCE, dedicated to the falcon god Horus. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator; our Egyptologists lead focused 90–120 minute visits that explain the temple’s inscriptions and ritual scenes. We treat Edfu as an archaeological visit rather than a quick photo stop used on many cruise schedules. Unlike standard cruise timetables, we schedule visits to avoid the busiest boat arrivals whenever river timings allow. There is limited shade in the forecourt and uneven stone underfoot; morning visits are cooler. Standard site entrance fee is included unless stated otherwise.

Temple of Esna – Ticket & Guided Visit (Luxor)

The Temple of Esna is a late Ptolemaic–Roman temple in Esna, notable for its 24-column hypostyle hall and carved ceiling panels. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange timed visits with one of our Egyptologists to explain the late-Ptolemaic reliefs and Roman-period inscriptions. Unlike the rapid photo stops offered on many river-cruise timetables, we avoid peak cruise-ship windows so you can study the columns and ceiling without the usual souvenir pressure. We do not run group-bus tours; transfers use private cars from Luxor on request. Trade-offs: limited shade, narrow aisles and some uneven ancient paving.
