Accessibility

Who can join this

The cruise involves repeated embarkation and disembarkation at river quays, access to gangways with steps, and walking on uneven temple stone during shore excursions. Boarding a Nile cruiser typically requires climbing a short flight of stairs from the quay to the main deck; some vessels provide a single removable ramp for wheelchair users, but availability varies by ship. Cabins have standard door widths and some cabins include an en suite shower with a small step into the cubicle. Shore excursions include sites with cobbles, stone steps, steep ramps and soft sand at Nile banks. If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, tell us at booking so we can select a vessel and excursions that are most suitable, and request meet-and-assist at the airport and quayside. We can arrange reduced-walking options at Karnak, Luxor Temple, Philae and the Valley of the Kings, but note that many tombs and temple platforms require steps and narrow passages; full access to all areas cannot be guaranteed. A licensed Egyptian tour operator arranges the cruise, and our local team can provide current accessibility details for the assigned vessel before departure.

Before you go

What to pack & wear

What to bring

  • Valid passport and photocopy
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Sunscreen SPF50+ and a wide-brim hat
  • Reusable water bottle for refill stations
  • Lightweight daypack for excursions
  • Power adaptor and spare phone battery
  • Small first-aid kit and any prescription medicines

What to wear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime
  • A light sweater for cooler evenings on deck
  • Covered shoulders and knees for temple and mosque visits
  • Comfortable closed shoes for archaeological sites
  • A hat and UV-protection sunglasses

Children & families

Children 0–5.99 years travel free; children 6–11.99 years pay 50% of the adult fare; children 12 years and older pay the full adult price. Children must share a cabin with their parents, maximum one child per cabin; two or more children require a separate cabin. Cabins are generally compact and corridors and gangways have steps, so strollers are not practical on board or at many shore sites. Cribs and high chairs are not guaranteed on Nile cruisers, please request these at booking and we will ask the assigned ship to provide them where available.

Responsible travel

How we travel here

Most Nile cruisers use diesel engines and on-board generators for propulsion and hotel power, so fuel use is intrinsic to the route. We work with cruise partners that operate modern engines with regular maintenance to reduce fuel inefficiency, and we ask ships to maintain wake control while navigating the river. We require suppliers to provide filtered water refill stations to reduce single-use plastic bottles, and many of our partners now segregate waste on board for local recycling where port facilities exist. Food is typically sourced from local markets in Luxor and Aswan, supporting farmers and vendors along the riverbanks. Shore excursion guides, boat crew and hotel staff are hired locally; excursion fees and tip distributions benefit local communities directly. Before you travel, we will share vessel-specific sustainability practices for the ship assigned to your booking, because measures vary by company and by ship.

Alyssa Nile Cruise

Alyssa Nile Cruise sails between Luxor and Aswan, calling at Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Philae Temple. We arrange small-group cruises with English-speaking Egyptologists, full-board meals, airport and port transfers, and entrance fees for the listed sites. Groups are capped at eight participants, so visits are quieter and queuing times are typically shorter than on larger cruise programs. The itinerary includes a horse-drawn chariot visit to Edfu and a folkloric evening ashore. Optional excursions, such as Abu Simbel from Aswan, can be added. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Cairo-based team coordinates every detail on the ground, from meet-and-assist to transfers and local guides.

Blue Shadow Nile Cruise

The Blue Shadow Nile Cruise sails between Luxor and Aswan with guided visits to Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Philae, Edfu and Kom Ombo. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator; our Egyptologists lead all guided excursions and explain the archaeology at each site. Onboard life alternates deck-side Nile views with full-board dining, short talks and an evening folkloric show. We do not run large-group bus tours, our sailings are restricted to small groups of no more than eight guests. Compared with mass-market coach tours, the cruise allows more time at Edfu and Kom Ombo to explore on foot.
