The decision

Choosing your base in Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm is a chain of bays along the South Sinai shore, each with a different feel, and some of the best reef in the world is usually just a few steps from the sand. Your real decision is between the lively, walkable bustle of Naama Bay, the calmer dive resorts by the airport and the wide family beaches further up the coast.

01

Naama Bay

First-timers who want everything on foot

This is where the resort began: a promenade lined with hotels, dive shops and restaurants that you can stroll from one end to the other. It is lively and central, and the simplest place to base a first visit to Sharm.

02

Sharks Bay & Ras Nasrani

Diving and quieter breaks

Bigger 5-star resorts sit on the reefs close to the airport. They are quieter than Naama Bay, and some have house reefs among the best in Sinai, a few steps from the beach.

03

Nabq & the northern coast

Families and all-inclusive

Large resorts stand on long beaches north of the airport, with sheltered water and plenty of space for children. They are self-contained, and the sand is the calmest anywhere on this coast.

04

Hadaba & the Old Market

Value and local colour

Hotels perch on the cliffs above Naama with the old town beneath them. Prices are better and it feels the most Egyptian part of a resort city, though you will need a shuttle to reach the main beaches.

Reading the star ratings

What the stars mean in Sharm El Sheikh

Along the Red Sea, stars tend to follow the style of resort and the meal plan, so this is what to expect at each level in Sharm.

3-star

A basic hotel in Naama Bay or up in Hadaba, normally bed-and-breakfast, with the promenade, the dive shops and the beach a short stroll or shuttle ride off. You get the sun and the reef without paying resort prices.

4-star

The workhorse all-inclusive, with pools, a choice of restaurants, a house reef and a dive centre. A reliable pick for families and couples around the bays.

5-star

The smart diving and beach resorts of Sharks Bay and Nabq, with landscaped gardens, better food, sheltered reef and rooms that vary a lot, so ask us which ones are nearest the house reef.

Before you book

The practical side of a Sharm El Sheikh stay

Some useful points to bear in mind when choosing your Sharm hotel.

01

How many nights

Three to seven nights is usual, normally all-inclusive. Sharm works as a beach and diving holiday in its own right rather than an extra on the end. It is a long way from the Nile sites, so people tend to give it the whole trip or a week of its own.

02

Arriving at the airport

The airport lies between the bays, five to twenty minutes from most resorts, and there are direct charter flights from the UK. Booking a private transfer is the easy option, though the bigger hotels have their own shuttles too.

03

Most rates are all-inclusive

Most Sharm resorts sell all-inclusive rates, and as the bays are designed around the hotel beach and reef, it usually works out well. Before you book, we check exactly what the board covers.

04

Diving decides where to stay

For keen divers, a house reef at Sharks Bay or Nabq saves a boat trip every day. For beach time with a bit of snorkelling, Naama Bay's walkable strip is the easier base. Tell us which sounds like you and we will point you the right way.

Common questions

Sharm El Sheikh hotels, answered

01Which part of Sharm El Sheikh is best for a hotel?+

Pick Naama Bay if you want the promenade, the restaurants and the dive shops within walking distance. Sharks Bay and Ras Nasrani have calmer 5-star resorts with excellent house reefs near the airport, while Nabq offers sheltered beaches for families and Hadaba and the Old Market suit anyone after value and local flavour. We choose the bay according to whether you plan to dive, swim or simply do nothing.

02Can I dive and snorkel well from Sharm El Sheikh?+

You can, and it ranks with the best anywhere. Ras Mohammed, the Tiran reefs and the house reefs around Sharks Bay and Nabq are all superb for divers and snorkellers. If the reef is why you are coming, we will find you a resort with a good house reef so you can slip into the water straight from the beach.

03How long should I stay in Sharm?+

Most people have between three and seven nights, and Sharm tends to be the whole holiday rather than an extra, because it is so far from the Nile sites. That is long enough to explore the reefs, take a boat trip to Tiran and, if you fancy desert as well as sea, do a night drive up Mount Sinai.

04Is it possible to climb Mount Sinai from a Sharm hotel?+

It is. You drive inland overnight to St Catherine, climb Mount Sinai with a guide at dawn and visit the monastery after sunrise, getting back to your hotel by mid-morning. We organise the late pickup. You will not get much sleep, but most guests feel the view from the top makes up for it.

05Are meals and airport pickup part of your Sharm hotel deals?+

Most come as all-inclusive or half board, and your quote spells out exactly what is covered. A private transfer from Sharm airport to your resort is easy to add, although many hotels also run a shuttle of their own.
