The decision
Choosing your base in Alexandria
Alexandria stretches along the Mediterranean for more than thirty kilometres. Most visitors base themselves between Stanley Bay in the east and the historic Corniche around Raml Station — a stretch that puts the sea, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Citadel of Qaitbay all within reach.
Stanley Bay
Visitors after a quieter, residential area close to the sea
A calm bay east of the centre, with a short sandy beach and less noise from the streets. It has several mid-range and 4-star hotels and works well for a one-night stop or a brief stay on the coast.
The Corniche & Raml Station
First-timers wanting the sea and the historic centre together
The sweep of boulevard along the Mediterranean from Raml Station westward holds the most atmospheric hotels in the city — wide views, the old tram line, and a fifteen-minute walk to the Citadel of Qaitbay.
Near the Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Culture-minded guests and anyone coming down from Cairo for the day
A small group of 4 and 5-star hotels beside the landmark library gives direct access to Pharos Island and the Eastern Harbour. It suits groups who arrive with a full day of sightseeing ahead.
Reading the star ratings
What the stars mean in Alexandria
Alexandria hotel ratings reflect a smaller, calmer city than Cairo — the 5-star tier here is quieter and more personal than the scale of a Nile-front Cairo palace.
Clean, air-conditioned rooms in the central districts or around Stanley Bay, along with some basic sea-view places. A sensible choice for one night in transit or a budget stay by the sea.
This is the grade we book most often in Alexandria: rooms facing the Corniche, a pool and dependable service. It works well as a relaxed base for excursions or for a night away from Cairo.
Waterfront towers with panoramic Mediterranean views, spas, and several dining venues. We book these for couples' stopovers and higher-end coastal extensions added to a Cairo holiday.

Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria
Opened in 1929, the four-star Steigenberger Cecil sits at 16 Saad Zaghloul Square in Alexandria's Raml Station district. It is a long-standing part of the city's hotel story, and the address puts you in the middle of an established urban neighbourhood rather than a resort zone. From here you can set out for the old centre and the Mediterranean waterfront. What your booking includes – room, meals, facilities – depends on the arrangement you pick, so confirm it before you pay.

Le Metropole Hotel Alexandria
Le Metropole Hotel is a five-star hotel from 1902 at 52 Saad Zaghloul Street, close to Raml Station in the centre of Alexandria. The building carries the city’s early twentieth-century hotel history, and the address puts you in the middle of Alexandria rather than at a beach resort outside it. Listed facilities include a restaurant, bar, room service, a business centre and an airport shuttle. A central street can be livelier than a seaside setting. Egypt Discovery can fit this stay into a wider Egypt trip, and we confirm the room category and any meals with the hotel before you book.

Tolip Hotel Alexandria
The five-star Tolip Hotel Alexandria stands on Corniche Road in the Roshdy district, on the stretch of coast road that follows the Mediterranean. That puts it on the seafront rather than in an inland suburb. The Corniche links the middle of the city with the eastern districts, so the hotel works as a base for seeing Alexandria, although journey times to individual sights depend on traffic. Egypt Discovery books the room for you through the hotel. The facilities listed for the property include a pool, spa, gym, bar and restaurant, but room details, meals and what is open should be confirmed for your dates before you commit.

Helnan Mamoura — 5-star boutique hotel on Mamoura Beach, Alexandria
Helnan Mamoura is a seafront hotel on Alexandria's Corniche offering a quiet Mediterranean base for short stays and conference use. We favour it for single-night stopovers because it places guests on the Corniche at sunset without central traffic. Montazah Royal Gardens and Montazah Palace lie a short drive away; Qaitbay Citadel is reachable by Corniche drive. Corniche rush-hour can add to transfer times and some rooms face the road rather than the sea. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange room reservations, private cars and half-day tours from Helnan Mamoura.

Hilton Alexandria Corniche
Hilton Alexandria Corniche is a five-star hotel at 544 El Geish Road in Sidi Bishr, on the eastern stretch of the city's Corniche. That is some way from the old centre around the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the western harbour. Alexandria is a Mediterranean port whose sights run from the ancient to the modern, and the hotel gives you somewhere to base yourself. Listed facilities include a pool, spa, gym, rooftop terrace and an airport shuttle, and the room, meal plan and extras follow the rate and dates you pick. Egypt Discovery can organise sightseeing and transport separately, so you can fit your hours at the hotel around museums, the waterfront and the historic quarters.

Palestine Hotel, Montazah, Alexandria
The Palestine Hotel is a five-star hotel in Montazah, in the east of Alexandria, at the address given as Al Montazah Palace. Montazah faces the Mediterranean and lies well away from the busy middle of the city, so this is a different kind of base from a downtown hotel, with the palace and its gardens as your local landmarks. Listed facilities include a pool, spa, gym, garden, restaurant and bar, plus an airport shuttle. Board basis and exact inclusions vary by rate. Egypt Discovery is a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can slot the stay into a wider Egypt trip.

Hilton Alexandria Green Plaza
Hilton Alexandria Green Plaza is a five-star hotel on 14th of May Bridge Road, in the Smouha district of Alexandria. It forms part of Green Plaza, a shopping and leisure complex, so the setting is modern and commercial rather than historic or seafront. Listed facilities include a pool, gym, spa, restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace and garden. Choose it if you would rather be in a newer part of the city than among the old waterfront streets. Egypt Discovery books the stay for you, and the room category, meal plan and extras depend on the rate you pick, so ask us to confirm them for your dates.

The Grand Plaza Hotel Smouha
The four-star Grand Plaza Hotel Smouha stands on 14th May Avenue in the Smouha district of Alexandria, on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. What a booking includes – room category, meal plan, facilities – depends on the rate and your dates, so confirm these before you pay. The facilities listed for the property include a restaurant, a bar and a spa. Egypt Discovery arranges the booking, and the hotel's own team runs your stay. This is accommodation at one named hotel, not a sightseeing tour and not a package with transfers.

San Giovanni Stanley Hotel – Alexandria
Overnight stay at San Giovanni Stanley Hotel and Restaurant in Alexandria, arranged by our licensed Egyptian tour operator. We book this property for travellers seeking an overnight base in Alexandria rather than a hurried day trip from Cairo. We don't run mass coach groups in Alexandria; bookings here are for private or small parties so arrival times and transfers remain flexible. We arrange private transfers and experienced local guides; ask us to add an evening Corniche walk or an early start for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Central hotels can be subject to traffic noise and limited parking; ask about quieter room options or alternative drop-off times. Bookable as a single-night stay or as part of a longer Alexandria programme.

Romance Alexandria Hotel
Romance Alexandria Hotel is a four-star hotel at 303 El Geish Road, in the Saba Pasha part of Alexandria. The road runs along the city’s Mediterranean side, so this is a coastal-city base rather than a desert or resort stay. The listed facilities include a restaurant, bar, gym, spa and free parking spaces on request, but board basis and exact inclusions vary by rate, so we check them for your dates before you book. This is a room-only hotel product: sightseeing in Alexandria and any transport are arranged separately unless your booking says otherwise. Egypt Discovery is a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can add those extras around your stay.

The practical side of a Alexandria stay
Some details that keep an Alexandria stay running smoothly under our care.
Getting there from Cairo
By private car along the desert highway the journey takes around two and a half hours. The driver collects you at your Cairo hotel and takes you to the door of your Alexandria hotel. No public buses are involved.
Airport transfers
Alexandria Borg El Arab (HBE) lies 45 km south-west of the city centre, so allow an hour. A private greeter and vehicle are arranged for you. If you are combining both cities, flying into Cairo (CAI) works perfectly well.
Best time to visit
The best months are April to June and September to October, with warm Mediterranean weather, less humidity than Cairo and manageable crowds. In July and August Egyptians take their own summer break here, so rooms are scarcer and rates go up.
Currency and payments
Everything is paid in Egyptian pounds. Corniche restaurants and 4 and 5-star hotels accept cards, but seafood stalls on the street and the markets take cash only. We pay the hotel invoice ourselves, so you need not carry a lot of cash.
Common questions
Alexandria hotels, answered
01Should I stay a night in Alexandria or make it a day trip?+
Done as a day trip from Cairo, you can see the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Qaitbay Citadel, the Corniche and have a seafood lunch, though it feels rushed. Staying a night brings evening light on the harbour, a quieter morning and time for the Graeco-Roman Museum without a five-hour drive back. If you are serious about the city, we suggest one night.
02Which hotels in Alexandria look out over the sea?+
A number of Corniche-facing hotels have clear views of the Mediterranean. We match you to the right room type when you book with us – a standard room with a sea view and a sea-view suite are very different things in the same hotel.
03Can Alexandria be added on to a Nile cruise?+
Yes. We can extend any Nile cruise or multi-day Cairo holiday with a private transfer to Alexandria, one or two hotel nights, and a private city tour — all confirmed under the same booking.
04Is Alexandria safe for tourists?+
For walking around on your own, Alexandria is among the easier Egyptian cities. The Corniche promenade and the city centre around Raml Station are busy, well-lit and hospitable. Standard city precautions apply – keep documents in your hotel safe, and use the private transfers we arrange rather than unmarked taxis.
