The right month for Aswan: heat, cool nights and the river

Aswan is one of the sunniest places on earth. A month-by-month guide helps you pick comfortable days for the boat, the temples and the markets.

Aswan has an almost cloudless sky, a river that cools the air a little, and desert behind it. That brings dry heat, big temperature swings and very little rain. The best month depends on how you cope with sun.

November to March: the easy months

Days are warm and sunny, and nights are cool. You can spend a whole morning at Philae or on a boat and still enjoy lunch outdoors. This is also the busiest season, so book hotels and cruises early, particularly around Christmas and New Year.

April and October: the shoulder months

Temperatures rise in April and fall again in October. Mornings and evenings are lovely, and midday can be hot. Both months offer good value and fewer visitors. They suit travellers who can plan around the middle of the day.

May to September: serious heat

Aswan is among the hottest places in Egypt in summer. Visits then are possible with planning: start at dawn, finish by late morning, rest in the afternoon, and go out again as the sun sets. Boat trips and a felucca at dusk are far more pleasant than a walk across hot stone.

  • Winter: warm days, cool nights, busiest.
  • Spring: warm to hot, good in April.
  • Summer: very hot, quiet, bargain hotel rates may be found.
  • Autumn: October is pleasant, with the heat easing.

Planning around the season

The long road days to Kom Ombo and Edfu or to Abu Simbel are best in winter. In summer, pick early starts and plenty of water, or choose shorter river trips instead. Whatever the month, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream are non-negotiable.

What to wear in each season

In winter, wear light layers by day and a jacket in the evening. In spring and autumn, light cotton, a hat and sun cream are enough. In summer, loose long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses protect you better than shorts and a vest. Good sandals or trainers help on hot ground. Bring a refillable bottle and drink from it often.

Nubian culture and the calendar

The Nubian communities around Aswan celebrate weddings and holidays with music and dancing, often in the cooler months. If you see a procession, watch respectfully and ask before taking photographs. Ramadan and Eid change the rhythm of the town, with shops opening late and closing for prayers. Ask us about your dates if you want to know what to expect.

Many travellers pair Aswan with Luxor, Cairo or a Nile cruise. Winter works best for all of these, and the weather in Cairo is also pleasant then. If you travel in summer, plan your Aswan days for the early morning and use afternoons for rest. Tell us your itinerary and we will help you time each stage.

If you can pick any month, go between late October and early March. If you must travel in summer, choose a hotel with a pool, plan your sightseeing before ten and keep the afternoons free. Almost everything in Aswan is easier by boat, in the shade or in the evening.

Browse the trips and tell us your dates, and we will help you choose a plan.
