Best time to go
The most comfortable months in Aswan are typically October to April, when daytime temperatures are lower and evenings are pleasant. From May to September, the evening format helps avoid the hottest part of the day, but the city can still be warm after sunset. During Ramadan and major holidays, schedules may be adjusted, so show times and pickup times should be confirmed in advance.

02Overview
A first look
Late light softens the Nile at Aswan, lamps along the Agilkia causeway beginning to outline Philae's pylons as the air cools. The narrated illumination plays sequence across reliefs and colonnades while you stand on the island forecourt, listening as conservation history and myth are projected in turn.
One of our Egyptologists accompanies the outing to explain the scenes and answer questions, and we time the evening to avoid the daytime heat and busiest visitor hours. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange your hotel pickup, a short motorboat crossing to Agilkia Island, and the return transfer so you simply arrive at the meeting point on time.
Background
The facts
Philae Temple is located on Agilkia Island near Aswan, after the original temples were dismantled and relocated during the Aswan High Dam salvage campaign in the 1960s and 1970s. The temple complex is associated with the cult of Isis and includes pylons, courtyards, colonnades and reliefs that reflect Greco-Roman and Pharaonic building phases.
The evening sound and light show is presented after dusk and uses illuminated projections and narration to explain the history of the site, the relocation project, and the main architectural features of the temple enclosure. Visitors usually reach the island by a short motorboat crossing from the Aswan Nile frontage, followed by a walk around the forecourts and perimeter of the monument.
From central Aswan, the transfer to the boat landing is short by air-conditioned vehicle, making the excursion practical as an evening outing. The site is best understood with an Egyptologist guide because the temple’s relief scenes, inscriptions and restoration history are part of the visit.
As with many evening archaeological experiences in Egypt, timing is arranged around sunset and show schedules, and the visit is generally less affected by daytime heat than daytime touring. Photography rules may vary during the show, so guests should check guidance on arrival.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- This excursion suits travellers who want a low-effort historical visit in the late afternoon or evening, especially adults and older children interested in Ancient Egyptian religion, temple architecture and relocation history. It also works well for first-time visitors to Aswan who prefer a guided experience with hotel pickup rather than arranging transport independently.
Maybe not, if
- Choose another visit if you need step-free access or want a daytime archaeological tour with more time to examine the temple. The evening show has a fixed schedule and can draw crowds at arrival time.
What lingers
- 01Watch the sound and light show at Philae Temple on Agilkia Island.
- 02See the temple complex illuminated during the evening presentation.
- 03Cross the Nile by motorboat between the Aswan area and Agilkia Island.
- 04Hear historical context from one of our Egyptologists.
- 05Visit a temple dedicated chiefly to Isis, relocated during the UNESCO-led Nubian monuments campaign.

Worth knowing
How this compares
Unlike a daytime temple visit, this evening excursion focuses on the illuminated monument and narrated history after dusk, with the advantage of cooler temperatures and a different presentation format. Unlike large coach transfers, the private or small-group format gives a more direct pickup arrangement and a less crowded experience at show time. The short motorboat crossing is part of the visit, so it suits travellers who want transport and site access organised in one booking.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Wear shoes with a firm sole; ancient stone surfaces can be uneven around the forecourts.
- 02
Keep your camera ready before the narration begins, as lighting changes during the presentation.
- 03
Bring a light layer in winter; the river breeze can make the return crossing feel cooler.
- 04
Ask your Egyptologist to point out Isis imagery in the reliefs before the show narration moves on.
Tailor it
Make it yours
The excursion can be arranged as a private departure or a small-group outing, depending on preference and availability. Optional modifications may include alternative pickup points in Aswan, a different pace for the walking portion, or add-on visits elsewhere in Aswan if scheduled separately.
Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.
Where it fits
Add this evening excursion to an Aswan stay that also includes the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. The sound and light show offers a different view of Philae Temple from a daytime visit, but it is a staged presentation rather than a substitute for an Egyptologist-led visit in daylight.

What to pack & wear
Children & families
The minimum age is 4. Strollers are not practical on the boat and cannot be used along the island route, so bring a baby carrier if needed. Please tell us in advance if a child under 12 needs a vehicle seat. We will arrange one when available, but cannot guarantee it without prior notice. Each child has their own seat, so transport, the guide and meals cost the same as for an adult whatever their age. Site entry is free for under-6s and full price from 6.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How long does the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show evening tour take?
Allow around two to three hours from pickup in Aswan to your return. The performance itself lasts about 45 minutes, with additional time for the vehicle journey and boat crossing. Your departure time depends on the show schedule for your visit date.02Where can I be picked up for the Philae Temple evening tour?
Pickup and drop-off are available at hotels in central Aswan and along the Corniche. Please give us your accommodation details when you enquire so we can confirm the meeting point and departure time. If you are staying outside these areas, ask us whether an arrangement is possible.03What is included in the Philae Sound and Light Show excursion?
The excursion includes return transport by air-conditioned vehicle from central Aswan or the Corniche, the boat journey to Agilkia Island, admission to the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show and guidance from an Egyptologist. Local taxes are included. The ticket is for the show, not an add-on visit elsewhere.04What is not included in the Philae Temple evening tour?
Gratuities for your Egyptologist and driver, food, drinks, personal purchases and souvenirs are excluded. Optional visits or other add-ons requested on the evening are also not included. Ask us before departure if you need to confirm whether a specific item or service is part of your arrangement.05How much walking is involved, and can visitors with limited mobility take part?
The visit includes a motorboat crossing and walking around Philae Temple on uneven ancient stone surfaces. There may be steps or changes in level, so the excursion may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility. Contact us before booking with your specific needs, and we can check what arrangements are feasible.06Is the Philae Sound and Light Show suitable for children?
Children can attend, but the evening timing may be tiring for very young visitors. The show uses narration and changing light across the temple, which may hold older children’s attention. Check the departure time and expected return with us before booking, especially if travelling with children who have early bedtimes.07What should I wear and bring to the Philae evening show?
Wear comfortable shoes with a firm grip for the uneven paths, and bring water and sun protection for the earlier part of the outing. Aswan evenings can feel cooler beside the Nile, so a light layer is useful. Choose modest clothing for a temple visit, covering shoulders and knees where practical.08Are photographs allowed during the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show?
Photography rules can depend on the venue’s instructions on the evening. Follow signs and directions from staff, and avoid flash unless it is expressly permitted. If you plan to record video, check the current policy at the entrance rather than assuming filming is allowed throughout the performance.09When is the best season to see the Philae Sound and Light Show?
The show is held after dusk, and the cooler months from October to April are generally more comfortable in Aswan. Summer evenings can remain warm. The outing avoids the daytime heat, but bring water and dress for the temperature on your travel date.10How do you reach Philae Temple on Agilkia Island for the show?
After the vehicle transfer from Aswan, you cross the Nile by motorboat to Agilkia Island, where Philae Temple stands. The boat ride is part of the arrangement, and an Egyptologist accompanies the visit. Unlike large coach transfers, a private or small-group option is available, subject to the arrangement you book.

Aswan: High Dam, Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk Day Tour
This private day tour visits the Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple on Agilkia Island and the Unfinished Obelisk quarry. Philae is part of the 'Nubian Monuments' UNESCO World Heritage Site; the temple was relocated to Agilkia during 1972–1980. The Unfinished Obelisk was intended to reach about 42 metres and would have weighed roughly 1,200 tonnes. We don't run group-bus tours; the visit is by private car, with a short motorboat transfer and one of our Egyptologists. Unlike quick cruise-boat calls, our schedule allows more time ashore to inspect inscriptions and quarrying marks. Standard site fees, motorboat crossing and transfers are included; gratuities are not. Expect limited shade on Agilkia Island, strong sun at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot.
