02Overview

A first look

The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo displays ceramics, metalwork, glass and textiles from across the Islamic world. We provide timed tickets and can pair your visit with one of our Egyptologists for commentary and context.

Background

The facts

The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo holds collections of Islamic material culture, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, woodwork, glass, manuscripts and calligraphy. The works span early Islamic periods, later dynasties and modern-era production.

The museum is in central Cairo near Bab Al-Khalq, within reach of historic districts and public transport links in the downtown area. A single-entry ticket grants admission to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions open at the time of entry, subject to museum rules.

The collections document Cairo’s role in Islamic scholarship, craftsmanship and administration. Visitors enter through the main entrance and pass standard security screening before reaching the galleries.

Opening hours and last admission can change by season, public holiday or special event. Check the museum’s official website before travelling. Photography rules vary, so confirm them at the entrance. The ticket is sent by email as a PDF after booking; check whether a printed copy is required and print it if unsure.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This entry ticket suits independent visitors, students and adults interested in Islamic art, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork and calligraphy. It works well for couples, solo travellers and families with school-age children who are happy to explore the galleries at their own pace.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose a ticket with an audio guide or arrange separate guidance if you want expert interpretation rather than a self-guided visit. It may also be less suitable if you need confirmed step-free access, as access can depend on the building layout and security procedures.

What lingers

  • 01Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo – houses Islamic decorative arts from the 7th to 19th centuries: ceramics, textiles, metalwork, manuscripts.
  • 02Private guided visits with our Egyptologists available; we recommend 60–90 minutes to view major Mamluk and Fatimid pieces.
  • 03Located on Port Said Street in central Cairo – compared with the Egyptian Museum, it focuses on Islamic decorative traditions.
  • 04Most visitors spend under two hours; allow extra time for the manuscript and textile rooms, which require close inspection.
  • 05Limited shade in the courtyard and uneven stone floors: expect steps and gentle slopes when moving between galleries.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Museum passes can cover several Cairo sites; this ticket covers admission only to the Museum of Islamic Art. Unlike a guided visit, it does not include a guide or transport, and visitors explore the galleries independently.

Archaeological Area of Dahshur Entry Ticket

Dahshur is a royal pyramid field south of Cairo, with monuments from the reign of Sneferu, founder of Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty. This date-valid entry ticket grants access to the archaeological area, including the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, along with surrounding monuments. Discovery Tours Egypt arranges the ticket through the site’s authorities; the site is not operated by us. Dahshur is quieter than the Giza Plateau, though facilities and visitor information may be more limited. Opening hours can vary by season, so check official information before setting out and consider arriving early. Photography rules vary; check at the entrance. Bent Pyramid, DahshurCairo

Bent Pyramid, Dahshur

The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur was built for Pharaoh Sneferu during the Fourth Dynasty and changes inclination from about 54° to 43°. The site forms part of the UNESCO listing “Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur.” We run Dahshur as a private half‑day visit from central Cairo rather than a rushed Giza add‑on, and we commonly combine this stop with the nearby Red Pyramid. Interior access to the Bent Pyramid is not guaranteed and is not included; we can request it for an extra fee. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we provide a private car and one of our Egyptologists for the visit.

Obelisk of Senusret I, Mataria (Heliopolis)Cairo

Obelisk of Senusret I, Mataria (Heliopolis)

The First Obelisk of Senusret stands in Matariya (Heliopolis), east Cairo; it dates to the 12th Dynasty under Senusret I (c.1971–1926 BCE). We treat it as a specialist stop: clients usually spend 20–30 minutes on site and combine it with nearby Heliopolis remains. Unlike large open‑air sites such as Giza, the obelisk is a roadside monument with limited shade at midday. Our Cairo Egyptologists read the inscriptions and explain the royal titulary; we purposefully keep the visit short rather than stretching it into a longer archaeological day. We can combine the visit with other Heliopolis remains and the nearby Matariya mosque in the same half‑day.
