Best time to go

October to April generally brings milder daytime conditions in Cairo and Giza; summer can be very hot, while limited airflow makes the interior feel strenuous. Visit early to avoid peak heat and visitor flow, and check the official opening schedule because hours and last admission can change seasonally or for conservation work. Ramadan and public-holiday hours may differ, so verify timings before travelling.

02Overview

A first look

Khufu's Pyramid is the largest of the three main pyramids on the Giza Plateau. The interior route passes through the descending passage and Grand Gallery to the King's Chamber; access requires a separate ticket and is limited daily.

Background

The facts

Khufu’s Pyramid, also called the Great Pyramid of Giza, stands on the Giza Plateau in Cairo. Built for Pharaoh Khufu during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty around 2600 BCE, it is the largest of the three main pyramids on the plateau and a major surviving monument of the Old Kingdom.

The Giza pyramid complex is approximately 13 km south-west of central Cairo. This ticket is for the pyramid’s interior, reached through a narrow opening on its north side. The route includes the ascending passage, the Grand Gallery and the King’s Chamber.

The pyramid forms part of Memphis and its Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage property inscribed in 1979. Inside, low, confined passages, steep ramps and uneven ancient stone make the visit physically demanding. Ventilation is limited.

Interior admission is separate from standard plateau access. Availability and opening hours can vary with the season, daily conditions and conservation rules, so check current information before travelling. Arriving early can help avoid peak heat and crowds. Photography rules vary; check at the entrance.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This entry ticket suits adults and older children interested in Fourth Dynasty architecture and ancient Egyptian archaeology. It is best for visitors comfortable with low, narrow passages, steep ramps and uneven stone, and who are happy to explore without included commentary.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose a surface-only visit if you have limited mobility, claustrophobia or difficulty stooping. The confined passages and steep ramps also make this a poor choice for toddlers and anyone unable to walk independently.

What lingers

  • 01Admission to Khufu Pyramid interior (Great Pyramid) on the Giza Plateau; passageways are confined and unlit in places.
  • 02Interior ticket sold separately from standard Giza Plateau entry; pyramid interior fees are not included in most site tickets.
  • 03Low headroom, steep ramps and uneven stones: visitors with claustrophobia or limited mobility should reconsider this visit.
  • 04Our Egyptologists brief you pre-entry on photography rules, required modest dress and the twenty to thirty minute confined visit duration.
  • 05Unlike half-day Giza excursions, we sell Khufu interior access as an optional add-on rather than bundled automatically.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Surface-only visits to the Giza Plateau do not include entry to Khufu’s Pyramid; this separately booked ticket grants access to its interior passages. We arrange the ticket, while the site itself is not owned or operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Does a Khufu Pyramid interior ticket include entry to the Giza Plateau?
No. A Khufu interior ticket allows entry inside Khufu Pyramid but does not automatically include general Giza Plateau admission. The Giza Plateau gate ticket is separate in most cases; we can arrange both together on request. Pyramid interior access is sold in limited daily allocations and is sometimes closed for conservation or special events, so booking the interior separately avoids disappointments.
  2. 02How physically demanding is going inside Khufu Pyramid?
The interior has steep, narrow passages, low ceilings and uneven limestone steps. You will stoop frequently and climb steep ramps and short flights of stone steps; temperatures can be higher inside. The visit involves close-quarter movement and brief standing periods; expect 15–30 minutes inside depending on queues. People with limited mobility, heart or respiratory conditions, or severe claustrophobia should avoid entering.
  3. 03Can children go inside the Khufu Pyramid?
Children are allowed, but the interior can be difficult for young children due to narrow passages and steep steps. Strollers and pushchairs cannot be used inside; guardians must carry very young children. Ticket offices or site staff may refuse entry if they judge it unsafe; we advise parents to consider a short exterior visit and the Solar Boat Museum as alternatives.
  4. 04Am I allowed to take photographs inside Khufu Pyramid?
Photography inside Khufu Pyramid is generally permitted without flash, though rules can change. Flash and tripods are typically prohibited to protect the monument; follow on-site signage and staff instructions. Security staff sometimes restrict photography in specific chambers for conservation or crowd control reasons, so expect intermittent limitations during your visit.
  5. 05Should I pre-book the Khufu interior ticket or can I buy on arrival?
Pre-booking is strongly recommended because daily allocations for Khufu interior visits are limited. Many visitors who try to buy on arrival find allocations sold out early in the day; closures for conservation also occur without notice. We do not include the interior by default on our standard Giza arrangements; we book it separately on request to ensure allocation and timing that suit your schedule.
  6. 06Is the Khufu Pyramid interior wheelchair accessible?
No. There are no wheelchair-accessible routes inside Khufu Pyramid; passages are narrow, sloping and involve uneven stone steps. Wheelchair users and others unable to negotiate steep, confined passages can view the pyramid exterior from the plateau and visit the nearby Solar Boat Museum instead. We can arrange a private viewing point and driver to minimise walking for guests with reduced mobility.

Obelisk of Senusret I, Mataria (Heliopolis)

The First Obelisk of Senusret stands in Matariya (Heliopolis), east Cairo; it dates to the 12th Dynasty under Senusret I (c.1971–1926 BCE). We treat it as a specialist stop: clients usually spend 20–30 minutes on site and combine it with nearby Heliopolis remains. Unlike large open‑air sites such as Giza, the obelisk is a roadside monument with limited shade at midday. Our Cairo Egyptologists read the inscriptions and explain the royal titulary; we purposefully keep the visit short rather than stretching it into a longer archaeological day. We can combine the visit with other Heliopolis remains and the nearby Matariya mosque in the same half‑day.
