02Overview

A first look

The Imhotep Museum sits inside the Saqqara archaeological zone, adjacent to Djoser's Step Pyramid. It displays excavated material from the surrounding necropolis in controlled exhibition spaces.

Background

The facts

The Imhotep Museum is an archaeological museum at Saqqara, displaying finds associated with the Step Pyramid complex and the wider necropolis of ancient Memphis. This single-entry ticket grants admission to the museum galleries and temporary exhibition spaces; it does not include nearby monuments.

Saqqara is roughly 30 km south of central Cairo. The museum is commonly visited as part of a wider visit to Saqqara or Memphis rather than as a city-centre attraction.

The museum presents architectural fragments, reliefs and funerary objects from Old Kingdom contexts. Imhotep was an architect and high official associated with King Djoser, whose reign dates to the 27th century BCE; he is linked to the early use of stone in monumental Egyptian building.

Opening hours vary by season and site operations, so check the official information before travelling. Allow time for security checks and ticket validation. Photography rules may vary; check at the entrance. The ticket is sent by email as a PDF, and visitors should check whether a printed copy is required.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This ticket suits adults and older children interested in archaeology, Imhotep and the Old Kingdom, especially visitors exploring the Step Pyramid complex at Saqqara independently. It is a good fit if you prefer a quiet indoor museum visit and are comfortable walking and standing in galleries.

Maybe not, if

  • Choose a guided visit instead if you want expert commentary, as admission alone does not include a guide. We’ll confirm step-free access and pushchair facilities before you visit.

What lingers

  • 01We include entry ticket to the Imhotep Museum at Saqqara, adjacent to Djoser Step Pyramid.
  • 02Displays artefacts excavated at Saqqara: stone reliefs, coffins and funerary equipment from the Djoser complex.
  • 03Modern climate-controlled galleries protect fragile finds and allow close viewing after exposure on the Saqqara plateau.
  • 04Visit immediately after the Djoser complex; the museum explains the finds you saw on-site and in context.
  • 05Unlike the Egyptian Museum, Imhotep Museum concentrates on Saqqara-specific archaeology and recent excavation results.
  • 06Entry covers Imhotep Museum access; entry to premium Saqqara tombs or pyramid interiors often requires separate tickets.

Worth knowing

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01What does an Imhotep Museum ticket include?
A standard Imhotep Museum ticket admits one person to the museum’s permanent exhibition at Saqqara. It does not automatically include entry to the wider Saqqara necropolis, premium tombs, or private-guided tours unless that is stated. We can arrange combined tickets or a private Egyptologist for a half-day Saqqara visit as part of your booking with us, a licensed Egyptian tour operator.
  2. 02What are the Imhotep Museum opening hours?
Opening hours change seasonally and for public holidays; please check before you travel. Timings frequently vary during Ramadan and on national holidays, and museums sometimes close early because of heat or official events. We confirm current hours when we finalise your itinerary and can schedule visits for the cooler morning slot where possible.
  3. 03Can I buy Imhotep Museum tickets on the day?
Yes – tickets are often sold at the museum ticket office, but availability can be limited on busy days. Queues and temporary closures do occur, particularly in high season and on public holidays. To avoid disappointment we recommend pre-booking through us; we can also request skip-the-line or guided-entry options when available.
  4. 04Can wheelchair users access the Imhotep Museum?
The museum has indoor galleries but accessibility varies; expect some steps and uneven surfaces around displays. The outdoor Saqqara necropolis has sand, cobbles and uneven ancient stone, which can restrict movement for wheelchairs. Tell us your mobility requirements in advance so we can arrange assistance, alternative routing, or a shorter museum-focused visit.
  5. 05Can I take photographs inside the Imhotep Museum?
Photography rules vary; flash and tripods are commonly restricted in archaeological displays. Commercial photography and tripods usually require prior written permission from museum authorities. Our Egyptologists can request authorisation ahead of your visit if you need professional images; otherwise follow the signs and the attendant’s instructions on arrival.
  6. 06How long should I allow for a visit to the Imhotep Museum?
Plan for roughly 45–90 minutes to see the museum galleries at a relaxed pace. If you combine the museum with the Step Pyramid and nearby mastabas, allow a half-day; the museum provides indoor, shaded interpretation which complements the outdoor necropolis visit. Unlike a quick pass-through of the site, a combined visit gives proper context for the objects on display.

Saladin Citadel (Al‑Qal'a) sits on Mokattam hill and was begun by Salah ad‑Din in 1176. The site contains Muhammad Ali Mosque (built by Muhammad Ali Pasha in the 19th century), Al‑Nasir Muhammad's mosque, the Gawhara Palace and the National Military Museum. We typically schedule 60–90 minutes on site so you can visit Muhammad Ali Mosque and take panoramic photographs across Cairo and the Giza Plateau; standard site entrance fees are included. Dahshur is quieter than the Giza Plateau, though facilities and visitor information may be more limited. The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur was built for Pharaoh Sneferu during the Fourth Dynasty and changes inclination from about 54° to 43°. The site forms part of the UNESCO listing “Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur.” We run Dahshur as a private half‑day visit from central Cairo rather than a rushed Giza add‑on, and we commonly combine this stop with the nearby Red Pyramid. Interior access to the Bent Pyramid is not guaranteed and is not included; we can request it for an extra fee. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we provide a private car and one of our Egyptologists for the visit.
