The short answer
Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour is a 1-day Cairo excursion covering the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Hanging Church, and St Sergius in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months for Cairo sightseeing are generally October through April, when daytime temperatures are milder and walking conditions are easier. Summer visits are still possible, but midday heat can be high, so earlier departures are usually preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and traffic patterns can change, so timing should be confirmed in advance.
02Overview
A first look
We visit Khan al-Khalili, the Mosque‑Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, Ibn Tulun and key Coptic sites including the Coptic Museum and the Hanging Church. The tour includes on-foot sections on uneven cobbles and narrow lanes, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
Background
The facts
Islamic and Coptic Cairo are two connected historic districts that preserve major layers of Egypt’s medieval Islamic and early Christian heritage. A typical sightseeing route combines the Citadel of Saladin, founded in 1176 under Ayyubid rule, with Old Cairo sites such as the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) and the Church of St Sergius (Abu Serga), which is traditionally associated with the Holy Family’s stay in Egypt.
The Citadel sits on a hill east of historic Cairo and offers broad views across the city; on clear days, parts of the Giza Plateau can be seen from higher vantage points. Inside the citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built in the 19th century and is known for its Ottoman-inspired domes, minarets, and alabaster-clad interior. The complex also contains museums and defensive structures, but the main visitor draw for this excursion is the mosque and the elevated setting.
Old Cairo, also called Coptic Cairo, preserves churches and lanes associated with the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The Hanging Church is built above a gatehouse of the Roman Fortress of Babylon and is one of Egypt’s most famous Coptic churches. St Sergius Church is smaller and older in layout, and its underground crypt is one of the places often linked in tradition to the Holy Family route in Egypt.
Islamic Cairo refers to the medieval core of the city, where Mamluk-era mosques, madrassas, and bazaars remain part of the urban fabric. Visitors usually combine vehicle transfers with short walking sections because the streets can be narrow and traffic dense, especially around Old Cairo and the Citadel approach roads. Entrance fees for the included sites are typically handled as part of the excursion, while the route is planned to reduce waiting time and keep the schedule manageable within a single day.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How long is the Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour?
Typical duration is four to five hours, usually taken as a half-day tour. We generally start between 08:00 and 09:00 to avoid mid-morning traffic and heat. If you prefer more time at Khan el-Khalili or the Coptic Museum we can extend to a full day.02Which sites are included on the Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour?
Typical sites include the Citadel (Muhammad Ali Mosque), Sultan Hassan, the Hanging Church and Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Itineraries vary by opening times; some departures add the Coptic Museum or Ben Ezra Synagogue. Unlike larger coach tours, we combine short drives with walking in historic lanes to reduce long coach waits. Standard site entrance fees are included unless stated otherwise.03Are entrance fees and lunch included?
Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors and premium tombs are excluded. Lunch is not included by default, but we can book a nearby restaurant serving traditional Egyptian dishes if you wish. Gratuities for guides and drivers are not included.04What should I wear and bring for the tour?
Dress modestly for mosques and churches: shoulders and knees should be covered; women should carry a scarf. Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen), comfortable walking shoes, bottled water and small change for the bazaar. We recommend a photocopy of your passport for ticketing; expect security checks and avoid large backpacks.05Is the tour suitable for travellers with limited mobility?
Many historic sites have uneven stone floors, steps and limited step-free access; full accessibility is not guaranteed. The Hanging Church and some mosques have steps and narrow passageways; vehicles can drop you close to entrances where possible. Contact us with specific mobility needs and we will advise which parts are manageable and arrange alternatives.06When is the best time of day to do the tour?
Morning departures (08:00–10:00) avoid heat and the busiest hours at the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili. Afternoon visits are hotter and can coincide with prayer times when mosques close for short periods. During Ramadan opening times and dining options differ; tell us your travel dates so we can plan accordingly.07Who conducts the Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour?
A licensed Egyptian tour operator arranges the tour and provides an English-speaking local guide. Our guides are locally based and provide historical commentary; drivers are registered and familiar with Cairo traffic patterns. We operate on the ground, not through an overseas reseller, and can adjust timings for your group.

AswanAbu Simbel by Plane from Aswan – Day Tour
We arrange a private return flight from Aswan International Airport (ASW) to Abu Simbel Airport (ABS) for a day visit to the temples at Abu Simbel. Flight time is approximately 40–50 minutes each way. On arrival our English-speaking Egyptologist will guide you at the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari. The site forms part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae (UNESCO, 1979). We include standard site entrance fees, airport handling and domestic flight taxes, and private transfers to and from your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise. Practical notes and trade-offs: the tour requires an early start and is tightly scheduled according to domestic flight timetables; the on-site visit is usually brief (typically 1–2 hours) so you should expect a short, focused walk around the façades and interiors. There is limited shade at the site and much walking is on uneven ancient stone. Photography opportunities are best outside the temples; the solar alignment that illuminates the inner sanctuary of Ramesses II occurs around 22 February and 22 October each year. Flights use regional aircraft and luggage/weight limits set by the carrier apply. The tour is operated by our Egyptologists and ground team, licensed by the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETAA).
